What wattage are the HPS lights around it? Odds are if the surrounding lights are 100W HPS, this is 175W while if the surrounding HPS lights are 50W or 70W then this light is more likely to be 100W. In my neighborhood it’s kind of tricky though because there’s a mix of 100 and 50W HPS lights so when I find a merc without a NEMA sticker, it’s harder to identify what wattage it is (unless there’s no refractor, then it couldn’t be any easier! 100W lamps are noticeably smaller than 175W lamps.

I’d say this is 175W then. It might be the only 100W merc on the road and it wasn’t changed to 50W HPS, but probably 175W.

Yeah 175w MV usually gets 100w HPS while 100w MV usually gets 70w or even 50w HPS.

The light is still there but with a new ballast.

Are you sure? NGrid has NEVER replaced ballasts before. They don’t carry spare ballasts on the truck so the only way they could’ve done this was if they pulled the new ballast from a new fixture. If they did that it just makes all the more sense to install the new fixture I know of some HPS versions of this. This could be one of them.

The tag was hard to read but looked blue was hard it looked too old, I think you are right.

What city was this in? If it was in old Blackstone Valley Electric territory and has a NEMA tag it's likely HPS. BVE started to use HPS when NEMA tags came out in the late 70s. NECo still used mercs after the late 70s though. Most of the mercs in the 70s hadn't had NEMA tags since they hadn't rolled out until the late 70s. HPS GE lights were the first to have NEMA tags.

Ahh. If it's Providence, then I believe this is former Narragansett Electric territory (or course it's now National Grid territory). i always liked the MV dayburners as a little kid too. I used to call the mercs "white glow street lights" and I used to call NEMA heads "soda cans". I'm not sure why, but perhaps the shape somewhat reminded me of a can of soda? The first NEMA heads i remember were HPS are are in South Attleboro MA so maybe i linked the orange glow of HPW with Fanta Orange Soda?
