Ths insides of the OVH
The electronic ballast is very lightweight, and looks nice. I haven't been able to test it yet but I wonder how well this would work and all that stuff.

What do you think? Why do you think this has an electronic ballast instead of a magnetic? This is new to me, I never thought they put electronic ballasts in cobraheads, HID ones.

Interesting to see a factory electronic ballast. I wonder if a utility or company ordered it as a test fixture and then donated it to Restore after testing.

I dunno if has been tested at all to be honest. I mean I just tested it and it works nice but not sure. It hasn't been used, and the sticker was still over the terminal board (in front of the connectors so you have to take the sticker off before you can hook up the wired to the terminal board) so it wasn't connected after it left the factory though. Most likely was excess was ordered or something. The date is 2008, so it's new enough to have the new hinge and latch design but still an older light.

I know NYC used electronic ballast in their lights before they went LED.

What exactly is the benefit for one of these electronic ballast lights? I know they are offered only up to 150 watts, but why use this instead of just a normal magnetic ballast? Is it just more cost efficient? Or energy efficient?

@Lil'Cinnamon:
Higher cost, but more energy efficient.

Back in 2009 when Toronto was testing alternative light sources, electronically ballasted HPS was tested amongst other light sources like induction, LED and PSMH?. I believe they never really rolled them out but the few test fixtures might still remain in service.

They never used electronic ballasts for street lights here but one of the reasons NYC used them in massive numbers was for the nearly-instant restrike time. A benefit of electronic ballasts over magnetic is that the lamp is virtually flicker-free (which is really only an advantage indoors, since it would really have no effect for street lighting...)
