This is a brand new trafffic signal pole, it use to have a B2255 and an aluminum Fortran/GE traffic signal, I guess the pole got knocked over, so now there's a 125 and poly signal...
I think it was because the arms where very rusted, not like they couldn't of replaced the arm but by that point it was probably worth going new. Some aluminum ped. signals did get retrofitted to countdown in Brampton but only a very small number.
Well at least you guys retrofitted some of your signals, my area decided it was a good idea to scrap all the old aluminium heads and replace them with poly LED heads.
I think my area stopped using aluminum signals around 2000, there's a pair of aluminium beacons here that were installed in 1999 and got retrofitted instead of replaced. My area started replacing the signals in the summer of 2003 and finished around 2006-2007. Toronto on the other hand still had some fully incandescent signals as late as a month ago.
As for aluminum signals I believe Oakville was the last in the GTA to use them.
I knew it was this intersection! It seems the last year, the city has been cutting back on using coopOVX's in these situations, hence more proof you give here. This mast arm was octoganal before replacemnt. This is a regional road, these are the only roads in the city of brampton you will find octoganal traffic signal mast arms before the region went with spun aluminum like the rest of the city, I believe. I think they're shakey and ugly looking, mississauga and vaughan use them by default (usually), if you want a visual.
By the way, brampton retrofitted all traffic signal heads, and walk/hand pedestrian indicators to LED regardless of its age (resulting in plenty of abandoned incanescent walking man housings around). Count down signal implementation for all new signals came later, and the norm is to scrap ped signal housings when a countdown+walk/hand pair head is installed.
Funny note, toronto uses incandesent bulbs in their amber/yellow lights instead of LEDs
I think it is up to the contractor to decide what cobra they use, I have noticed that less OVXs are being used though, it seems 115 have taken over for 250 watts for the most part, now the OVX is only used for 400 watt installs. I never liked those octagonal arms either, they'll all be gone soon anyways, with the road widening on Dixie in the near future. I know I have seen a few countdown signals that where retrofitted, I think in the very start of the conversions, I know they now replace the heads for no apparent reason.
Hmm, my area (Markham/Richmond Hill) used to use those arms but now seem to have switched to the aluminium ones. We even have some old signal poles from the 70s left here with either double guy arms or another type with a fixed flange on the pole for a single mast arm.
When my area added in countdowns they just crammed in a extra section underneath like this.
Oh and speaking of cobras my area still hasn't decided which brand of cobra to use in fact a new GE M400A3 drop lens got installed last week.
@gailgrv: You noticed what I have, it is becoming very obvious that the only OVX's being insalled are in 400W by our city's maintenance contractor enersource. And out of the past 10 road reconstruction projects undertaken by other contractors, like 9 havn't used OVX's where 400w cobras are required. btw your picture indicates to me guild installed this replacement pole (no sarcasm, i like em)
@joe: double guy traffic signal arms are CLASSIC! ...toronto has them left still too. I think I remember seeing some in brampton when I was like 5.
You can call me Niall. I would personally rather see Emersource use the 125 for 400 watt installs but I think the OVX is cheaper and being smaller, easier to install. I'm pretty sure Guild did this since they do most repairs.
Queen street used to have double guy arms at Bramalea road, The last double guys in Brampton are here http://goo.gl/maps/oAbRP and here http://goo.gl/maps/U4s7j the ones at bramalea and mayfield are coming down though unfortunately. What happend to that B2255 anyways? It was there one day and then the next day that 125 was there and a whole new pole
I hope they don't widen Dixie. It has probably the best variety of signals and cobraheads in the whole city. The construction has halted right before where the last CGE 8-8-8 is. It will be gone next year as they make they're way up to Clark or Queen. The signals that were on the ground were taken over to Torbram last month or so. That CGE on the right side is gone too.
