Hey!..they had some of these in Dallas!
GullWhiz   [Apr 29, 2010 at 07:50 PM]
Those were fairly common in Long Island and New York City......but they seem to be getting phased out already...

Why is LPS Phased out these Days?.....all of the Installations in Tyler were removed

Cost of the lamps most likely, plus HPS got close to them in efficiency, and have a less restricted lighting position ( even eedjoots can install them now) in a smaller package.

My guesses:
- Large arc size make lanterns inefficient, beside quite high efficacy of lamps alone. On top of this is quite low efficiency of LPS magnetic ballasts
- Monochromatic yellow is more and more considered as unacceptable color quality
- It is the most difficult lamp technology to make, what lead to very high cost and a lot of defects causing early failures
- LPS lamps have way too many early failures - requiring spot relamping (for group relamping the useful life would be only few hundred hours - for max 2% failures)

I think they lost the competition with HPS on system efficacy (in open outdoor areas, where the small HPS arc allow way better optical efficiency of the lantern), in low wattage range their efficacy is not higher then modern CFL's (so white 80+CRI light win), in tunnels they lost on maintenance cost with induction and recently with extra long life fluorescent (useful life 50+ khour clearly win here) and on purchase cost they lost to all other, may be except LED's and induction...

@ Medved, you seem to have good English usually, is English your secondary language??? I don't mean to point it out, but your word use of "loose" is wrong Wink "loose" means "not tight" the correct word for the first "loose" would be "lost" "I think they LOST the competition with HPS on system efficacy", "in tunnels they LOST on maintenance cost with induction" I am not sure if the last word should be "LOSE" or "LOST" though..... "and on purchase cost they LOST/LOSE to all other, may be except LED's and induction..."

Anyway back to the topic.....which I mentioned before the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel used to be fully lit with LPS, but now they are induction which I mentioned in www (DOT) galleryoflights (DOT) org/mb/index (DOT) php?topic=79 (DOT) msg897#new

@Jace: Corrected, thx... Smile
No at all, but i need it in my work. But i learned it only by the "Jump to the water and try to survive" method. 3 month stay in US (back in 2003) helped a lot there. Ironically during all my study i focused to german (totally 12 years from elementary till university), but totally forgot it in few months (when started to work)...
