Very rare and now in good hands ! Either from Wilshire "Miracle Mile" district or former Sepulveda near LAX installation. 2 per pole, optical assemblies configured as right and left handed, 400 watt clear mercury, painted all green. Despite the model 101 NEMA head which is empty, these have same horizontally mounted lamp, internal reflector, and 510 glass as the classic form 400. Very unique and reminiscent to the earlier form 109.

Wow, I'd say this is one hell of a NEMA head! Very Happy

There are still some on Wilshire Blvd to this day.

They are slowly being replaced with kinda look alike MH fixtures. They used to go for miles between Korea town to Beverly Hills. The survivors are still mercury and worth a drive at night if in the area. They begin near Peterson museum and go east.

Nice fixture!
Form109   [Mar 15, 2016 at 08:36 PM]
so were these lights made specifically for that area??
vintagelites   [Mar 16, 2016 at 05:54 AM]
Pretty much appears so. Only place I have witnessed right and left versions for double head use. Dave's is the left side and I have the right side in my collection. There used to be single versions with straight mounted optical assembly in the L.A. area. They are long gone.

What do you mean by left side and right side? Were two versions of this made?

Reflector drilled for 45 deg. slipfitter orientation either for left or right. I posted photo in the gallery to clarify.

Do these have integral or remote ballasts?
streetlight98   [Mar 20, 2016 at 02:23 PM]
Definitely remote. No way a 400W MV ballast would fit in there.

Very cool! I love those fixtures. How does the socket mount? Is it like the Form 109 to mount the lamp horizontally, or is the lamp vertical or at an angle? These look like a Form 400 stuck on a NEMA head.

Buffalo used incandescent versions of these throughout the city. They came in either bare aluminum or painted grey.

These are horizontal mounted lamps like the Form 400. My thought process is these were equipped to be originally incandescent and convertible to mercury at a later time. That being said, these green painted Wilshire versions were mercury from day 1 and were installed in 1955 on existing poles/arms.
