New fluorescent street light in San Diego
Henry aka Dimbulb took me to this area of San Diego where the new fluorescents were recently installed. They are nice, BUT they replaced mercury lights :( I took this picture while sitting in Henry's 1960 Plymouth. Nice old car.

Dunno when, San Diego is 2.5 hours from where I live. Maybe I will take a close up of one in Compton, CA where more of these are found and it's only 50 minutes from me.

Nice! Better these than LEDs or even HPS. These 54w lamps are bright! I have seen similar lamps in use and they're very bright.

I am wondering what these look like when close up too. Mebbe I can help find out who made these.
Silverliner14B   [Jan 05, 2010 at 12:26 AM]
Yes they are nice, however they are a bit lacking in light distribution.
FGS   [Jan 05, 2010 at 12:34 AM]
Mebbe better optics? Like Jace's XGS fixture? Hey Jace can you post a pic of both LPS on here? Just save them as 640X480 size. That's what I do with my pics. None of my pics even reach 75kb and they're all 640X480 size.

Maybe the optics do need some working to do. I saw some nice induction street lights in Oceanside, CA that have a pretty good light distribution. Almost like mercs!
FGS   [Jan 05, 2010 at 12:47 AM]
Any chance of you having a pic of those lights?
Form109   [Jan 05, 2010 at 01:46 AM]
do they Not Put Enough Light on the Ground,or is it not Concentrated Enough?...too Diffuse?
Silverliner14B   [Jan 05, 2010 at 02:31 AM]
The luminaires don't distribute light far enough, only a fairly small pool under the lights.
Medved   [Jan 05, 2010 at 06:59 AM]
For good AND efficient light distribution you need large ratio between bulb-reflector (or refractor) distance to light source dimensions. So you need or small light source, or huge optic assembly...
This is the reason, why i don't like fluorescent, nor LPS streetlights - due to the lamps being physically large lanterns are often glary and yield poor illumination quality (too large differences between darkest and brightest illumination level, too much spill light). I think CMH with well designed optic (this should not be difficult, only it should to only not be neglected; there is plenty of margin in optic/light source dimensions ratio)

There are some CMH cobraheads in Pasadena, CA. Since they are only 100w, they are a little dim but still nice.

FGS, if you wanna go through a tunnel of Induction (Icetrons) visit me and ill give you a ride to the tunnel in Baltimore...just gimme pay toll Razz

isnt 100 Watt MH about Equilivent to 175 Watt MV?
Silverliner14B   [Jan 06, 2010 at 02:56 AM]
A 100w MH is appromixately 6400 lumens so that is less than a 175w MV but more than a 100w MV.
Form109   [Jan 06, 2010 at 04:32 AM]
Dave...any Idea how those CMH Cobraheads are Lasting?...are they Burning Years or Months?
Silverliner14B   [Jan 06, 2010 at 07:04 AM]
I don't go there often so I can't say exactly how long they are going. When I saw them lit, only one was out, though.
GullWhiz   [Jan 06, 2010 at 05:05 PM]
I have seen CMH do a decent job...
Medved   [Jan 06, 2010 at 07:55 PM]
70W Powerball CMH is about 6600lm new, 6000lm average - i think it is even more then 70W HPS...
gailgrove   [Jun 05, 2010 at 11:42 PM]
No a 70 watt HPS in about 7250 lumens.
Form109   [Jun 06, 2010 at 01:37 AM]
it Varies by Brand...6000 Sounds Closer.
mercuryvaporrocks   [Jun 06, 2010 at 02:57 AM]
Most of them are rated at 6,300 lumens too.
