AE 125`s before the storm
These AE 125`s are less than a year old actually. OV-25`s were used here before but they replaced all the OV-25`s here with AE 125`s. One R47 still remains here and 2 AE 25`s. Dark clouds made for an interesting picture lol.

I wonder why they replaced all the OV-25s with 125s. Unless they had had failed ballasts. Razz

Those ballasts will get crispy after many years of valiant service, possibly a China lamp took the ballasts out. Rolling Eyes we have tons of the ael 125s here and in 400w mv flavor.

Yeah I think they were all grouped together, If i remember right there were no PCs on any of the OV-25s
joe_347V   [Aug 04, 2015 at 12:13 AM]
Hmm, I wonder if it was a MTO install then since they liked to use group relays. Maybe they swapped out the lights so that they could use individual PCs instead.

Hmm MTO and RIDOT seem to do the opposite of each other lol. RIDOT is phasing out the few highmast installations around here while the MTO is installing highmasts left and right. RIDOT is slowly converting or replacing their PC-controlled lights over to relay units while MTO is apparently using more PCs now? Unless this installation used to be MTO-owned but is now municipal-owned?

Heh, maybe lol. I know of two exceptions to the replace everything with highmast lol. Parts of Hwy 7 and Hwy 85 got new poles and LED fixtures for some reason instead of highmasts. The new extension of Hwy 401 is lit with HPS OVFs for some reason lol. I should post my pics. Razz

This looks like a freeway overpass so I'm guessing the lighting was installed by MTO when the overpass was built but the maintenance was handed over to the city after the freeway opened so I'm guessing the city decided to convert everything to PC controlled lights.

Often here, roads that pass over freeways have NGrid owned poles on the bridges. Here are some examples. When the NGrid freeway lights are replaced by RIDOT lights, often times the overpass lights are kept as NGrid-owned. RIDOT knows that most bridges here in RI are from the 1970s or older so they will need to be replaced in the next couple of decades. As bridges are replaced, the new lights are usually RIDOT-owned or they just eliminate the lights. Not all bridges have lights to begin with though.

Here's a new bridge with RIDOT lights. The left part of this bridge is a public road with RIDOT lights. . However, new NGrid lights are still installed, but only on city streets. Here's a string of new M-250R2s from 2010/2011.

Most of the MTO overpasses use individual PC's. Except for some of the older setups. In my city only 1 MTO overpass used all relay's. Now they are all completely gone now from being AE 115'd or OVX'd. @joe_347v I heard about it before and they actually have a 2015 streetview there now lol. Some overpasses here get the same treatment as they do down in RI. The aluminum poles are used in Toronto more and some other locations. All the overpasses in my city are steel poles though. Davits are only used on the Gardiner Express way.
joe_347V   [Aug 05, 2015 at 06:01 AM]
Ahh, parts of Highway 7 here still have the former MTO relay boxes at the intersections. I also noticed that parts of Toronto use pole mounted group relays. The Leaside bridge is like that with each side of OVXs being controlled by one relay.

I always found it interesting when the MTO rehabs a overpass and replaces all the lighting to MTO spec lights. Here's one that went from tapered elliptical to MTO truss.

Yeah for some reason when MTO rehabs a overpass in Toronto they install the Toronto spec lights (aluminium poles) instead of the MTO spec ones. this overpass originally had MTO truss lights as seen in this 1978 picture.
Model25FanForever   [Aug 05, 2015 at 12:10 PM]
I wonder what made them want to do that, There still are a few of the truss lights left there, just as OV-25's. In September/October the newest 2 Overpass lights were an OVX and a GE M250A. They were replaced quickly. In streetview they show up as AE 125's.

It might be contractor preference or even differences in the MTO divisions. I know MTO west has experimented with refitting lights to LED but MTO central/GTA is still installing HPS.
Model25FanForever   [Aug 06, 2015 at 12:13 PM]
I wonder if that LED highmast at the 400 407 is still running
joe_347V   [Aug 06, 2015 at 08:33 PM]
I wonder that too. I believe there's also a test LED highmast somewhere on 403 near Brantford.
streetlight98   [Aug 06, 2015 at 09:26 PM]
MassDOT installed some test LEDs a year or so ago on I-95 near the RI-MA line.
Model25FanForever   [Aug 06, 2015 at 09:35 PM]
5 or 10 years from now I bet 90% of citys will be full LED Sad
joe_347V   [Aug 08, 2015 at 05:49 AM]
I think so too, the only city in the GTA that hasn't have a official plan for a system wide refit or even a LED only new install is Toronto. The land of HPS and PSMH for now lol.
