Odd Sylvania 175W cram failure
expected to see a broken lens or something but it appears the pressure built up in the lamp outer bulb and blew the side open! never seen this before..but out of the hundred or so i have removed none have blown up, just stopped working, more pulse start lamps blow up or get bulged arc-tubes at EOL!

I wonder if it broke from thermal shock since the bulb on the cram lamps get hotter.

yeah probably, i have encountered some 400W Ushio's separate at the base Shocked and a GE has done it too

Yeah PSMH lamps run at hotter temperatures and pressures so they're more apt to blowing up.

I've seen a couple lamps blow up...or, I should say, the aftermath, lol. One was a 175w mercury vapor (Chinese Westinghouse) and the other was a Sylvania 400w Metalarc. The MV was in a cheap bucket light and that was a mystery but the MH was operating horizontal in a OV-25 for about 5 years... but the outer did stay intact. I was actually surprised it lasted that long!

I'll guess the broken side was up? Maybe that was a hot spot on the glass. Anyway, MH lamp explosions are interesting, but I prefer to see protected lamps used even with enclosed fixtures, because an exploded lamp is not fun to clean up and sometimes the arc tube contents splatter on the inside of the lens.

yeah it was base up in a cheap stonco all plastic wallpack

I'm guessing it's sorta like those plastic HPS tallpacks then.
