I think these are fluorescents , the LPS lumes were slimmer. Too bad the pic dosen't show the black CGE ped signal clearly as it might be old enough to have DONT WALK on it instead of the hand.
Yeah it seems like Toronto had a lot of these! This is Front Street which has the Unidors Gumballs and AE 125's. Any photos of Black CGE's I found in Toronto all had the Don't walk and Walk. The yellow ones were all the man and the hand.
Nice! I'm surprised you guys had fluorescent lights seeing how they don't like the cold all that much. I figured that was more of a warmer climate lighting choice (like Florida or California).
Yeah Toronto had fluorescent streetlights on some downtown streets and on the expressways back in the late 60s and 70s. I know of some still in use but they're not in Toronto.
In fact I think some parts of downtown never had mercs at all, they went from incandescent to metal halide.
Yeah there was some place on Lundy's Lane (well i think it was a different name but the same road) with a couple of functioning fluorescent lights. I don't think fluorescents were used here. LPS wasn't either except for one or two test lumes from the 40s but those are long gone, probably replaced with MV by the 60s.
Yep, that's a fluorescent. We used to have some fluorescent streetlights here in Southwest British Columbia in the mid 60's to early 80's.They were on the on-ramps and off-ramps of the freeways. Some municipalities on Vancouver Island used to have fluorescent streetlights on main roads and residential streets.
It turns out Toronto still had the fluorescents as late as the mid 80s. See here for a 80s video of some still in use. It shows someone turning from northbound Yonge on to eastbound Carlton. That stretch is HPS now.
It later turns south from Carlton on Church, west on Gerrard, back south on Yonge. Stops in front of the Eaton Centre and then continues down Yonge.
If you watched the beginning of the vid, the car turns north from Gould on to Yonge.
Also note the massive number of backplateless 8-8-8s still in use, the backlit street signs, and the 8" green arrow at Yonge and Dundas.
