I was originally going to put it near the top of the pole, but then it woulda stuck up above the rail (which I didn't like the look of)...
So I just kinda picked a lower spot, turned out perfectly as far as lining up on the yard too.

Yeah it looks good! My deck is kinda short so I mounted it as high as I could, plus the area it's mounted is where the grill is so no one's over there. The top bolt on the mast arm of my street light on the deck is 8ft exactly and the arm has a little bit of a rise on top of that. How tall is your deck from the top of the rail to the ground?

The light I'm adding to the shed will be about the same height as the one on the deck to keep things uniform.

I considered doing this with the M-400A I was going to get (and still may) when I still lived in the house in Atascadero part-time...that had a second-floor deck. It would've lit the driveway.

Its around 11.5 feet to the top of the rail at the point where light is mounted (center pole of the deck)

I also have 2 smaller fixtures mounted on 8' poles at the back of the lawn (1 HPS, 1 MH both put up a couple years ago)...I plan to post pic's of those later since I see I never ended up doing it .lol.


I look forward to seeing a pic of that 2nd light of yours once you get it on the shed

@ Andy: You'd need a real street light mast arm, which would be expensive. I have four and I'm lucky to have not paid a dime for them but they're short arms (which work fine for set-ups like this but when I get my own place and if I install poles I would like 6ft arms) A $10 yardblaster arm wouldn't work for that behemoth of a light you got lol.

@ xmaslightguy: Ah so that flood is probably about 10ft high, which is perfect IMO. Low enough to cut back on light trespass and keep it from being a nuisance from the deck railing and high enough where it's out of reach from below. I'd actually like the light in my yard to be higher up but it can't be any higher. And with the one on the shed that I'll be installing, the EMT is 10ft long and needs to be buried 18" so that leaves 8.5ft. The mast arm has another 6" or so of rise so the one on the deck might end up being around 9ft. It's gotta be under the shed's roof though since the shingles overhang about a half-inch so I want to avoid messing with them since we haven't had any roof issues with the shed and I'd like to keep it that way. I'd love to see pics of those 8ft lights when you get the chance!

I will post pics of the shed pole installation. I'm really looking forward to having it too. The reason for the new installation is two-fold. One, so I can have another light for the yard. Second, I'm running out of space for lights so by installing an extra light, it creates one new spot for a light (or at least one less spot I have to create). I'm getting two cobraheads soon (something before summer I'd guess) so the new light post makes room for one and I'll work something out for the second. I nonchalantly told my mom that I'm getting the two lights from Steve (I originally had said one light before) and she didn't even seem to care. She must've thought I had said two the first time too. They're small sized cobraheads (small as in 27"-30" lol) as opposed to medium fixtures, which are typically around 36".

I have everything I need to install the new light pole set-up except for the $11 1-1/4" EMT so I could actually get this done within the next couple of weeks if the weather cooperates. I'll be away for one week this month so that kills two weekends right there and the two weeks after vacation I'm doing my eagle scout service project for Boy Scouts so this weekend (April 11 & 12) is the only chance I'll get until probably May 16th and 17th and of course, it's all weather-permitting. Our springs are typically overcast and rainy so who knows. So far it's been quite rainy!

My spring has been pretty nice, and the winter was mild too. I doubt I'll be doing many lighting projects though!

@Mike: yep around 10-feet, lights the grassy area perfect, then there's some pine trees at the back of the lawn that block out most of the escaping light (and a hill down to the house behind, so not much light if any will make it there) .. but this will only be used occasionally anyway.

I'll try to remember to snap some pictures of the other 2 lights on the weekend.

Spring so far has been nice here too, actually warmer & drier than normal (which has good and bad points)
There's one 'light project' I plan to do sometime, putting up some F32 strips on the porch.
