Inside of the 1968 M-400
This is after being disassembled, scrubbed clean, reassembled, and rewired. The ballast is a replacement Advance 400W MH (M59) that was installed in service. Like most cobrahead retrofits, the wiring was sorta sloppy (but overall a good job as far as retrofits are concerned lol) so I did the common sense stuff like eliminate wirenuts by using the terminal block provided, trimming excess wire length, and zip-tying the wires to neaten it up. 

I'm glad the ballast was replaced in service since the OEM ballast was a 277v single tap according to the nameplate. The replacement is of course multi-tap, meaning I can use this light! I can also use MH lamps too if I wanted.

Nice! Pics always play with perspective...the M59 ballast looks tiny but the light is actually pretty big, lol.

Thanks! Yeah these 60s M-400s are huge. They were the shortest 400W cobrahead of their time but the widest. Same for the M-1000. The glass is a beast on this though. Installation is pretty easy with the door and reflector removed. The reflectors on the 60s GEs just snap into place so removing is easy. That way you can grip the housing better.
