True that! There are HPS tallpacks behind my school at the doors to the cafeteria. One has a missing lens with an exploded CFL in it. The spiral is cracked up with parts missing and judging by the blackened casing, the lamp died pretty violently lol.
I can't. I got caught takign pics of the fluorescent lights in the hallways last time. If I get caught again I could get into some trouble (i.e. three 1-hour detentions with the principle.) I've mentioned the CPS disciplinary policy before. Electronic devices are prohibited in the hands of students anywhere on school grounds (including after school and outside the building) and a camera is included. I know- insane.
Ummm I read the disciplinary policy and don't see a thing against cameras, only pagers, cell phones, radios and those things......plus there's photography classes so why wouldn't they not allow cameras? It was allowed in my school, radios was actually allowed only on free time!
"17. If a student possesses any electronic device prohibited by State Law (beepers, pagers, cellular phones, portable phones, all types of radios, etc.), the student will be referred to an administrator. The device will be confiscated.
The Cranston Police Department may be notified."
My old high school was pretty lax about electronics, the teachers only got mad if you bother the class or something like that. In fact we even had wifi to connect out phones and laptops to.
wow that's a pretty awful policy that they have Mike
Joe: same with my old high school, although I was on GOL once in cooking class and a teacher came in the room and took my phone, this was when we had free time
One of reasons I actually believe in home schooling or private schools, because public schools are just becoming out of control, they call cops for petty issues, they have too much zero tolerance, they are kinda corrupt, there has been more fights, teachers can't handle all the kids!
My high school was bad too, the kids were nasty and many of the teachers were arrogant too. Anytime you have a legitimate complaint about bad behavior from other students, it's ignored by the staff.
@ Joe and Jace, cameras are classifyed as electronic devices here apparently. I don't see any harmful affects on the "learning environment" a camera would have, but I don't make the rules. They used "etc" so they can pretty much classify anything they want to as an electronic device. I got a warning when i took the pics of the fluorescent lights so my second offense will likely be the punishment, which is supposed to be given at a first offense, second being T.A.C. ("Teacher's Alternative Classroom" or AKA in-house suspension).
Homeschooling is a BRIGHT idea! Kids are safest there until they are old enough to stand up for themselves.....
I see too much news such as "school calls cops cuz little girl wets pants" and "School calls cops because a 5 year old gut frustrated and threw tantrum" and "Teacher makes fun of special Ed students" and "Teacher rapes a child" so Home School it is......no Boarding school nor Public school...sir....
Teachers aren't always right, I remember one member in LG said one of his teacher laughed at him when that member as a student told the science teacher a fluorescent light had mercury inside it, teacher laughed and said it was too dangerous and said it had fluoride in it, plus the other students gave the member a stupid look.....
You raise some key issues with public schools, but what about the pros of public schooling? Public schooling is much cheaper. My parents can't afford to send me to a private school even if they wanted to and they don't have the spare time to homeshcool me. Probably the most important thing public schooling give kids is the chance to interact with others. If you are homeschooled from kindergarten all the way to 12th grade, you may have soem trouble making friends and interacting with others.
I agree that teachers are not always right. I've never been insulted by a teacher or seen another student insulted by teacher, but I'm sure it happens. I've had teachers that absolutly HATE their job though. My current science teacher is an example as well as my elementary school art teacher.
Kids made fun of me in elementary school for being into traffic signs and lighting so around 6th grade I said I wasn't into lighting anymore and now that i'm in middle school (on my way to high school) I've never told any of my friends that I'm interesting in lighting because I don't want to go down that road again.
yeah well certainly there are good schools and bad ones, not sure what statistics are but the Rochester community schools here is pretty good
by the time I was sophomore year high school (2 years ago) no one really made fun of me for lighting, most people actually thought it was cool and everyone seemed more mature by then
For home schooling, I would still have kids attend boy scouts, girl scouts, sports, have get together....trust me a lot of the kids from my church are home schooled/private schooled and actually more well behaved and happier! And very social too! You have to make sure they are also actively doing other things, plus home schooling gets to go to a LOT more field trips!
Yeah, I find public schools to be quite variable in terms of quality and stuff like that so I guess if you're going to public you'll have to make sure you move into an area with a good school.
Oh and Mike, I find that kids in the last two years of high school onwards tend to be more mature and won't laugh at you for liking lights and signs. It seems middle school kids are the least mature out of the mix. O_O
That said, once summer comes i'll give it a shot.

Another reason not to support Public Schools.....
