Yep there was, although the 8-8-8s at the foot of Clifton Hill were still there last summer.
streetlight98   [Mar 13, 2012 at 02:58 AM]
Then I was there so were the 8-8-8 as well. I THINK they were incandescent too, but not positive...
joe_347V   [Mar 13, 2012 at 02:59 AM]
They were the exact same as my GE 8-8-8 incandescent with glass GE lenses.
gailgrove   [Mar 13, 2012 at 03:00 AM]
Hmm, they must of been replaced pretty recently then. Sad
joe_347V   [Mar 13, 2012 at 03:06 AM]
Well, I know the 8-8-8s on the intersection next to the Sheridan were still up last summer but the ones right next to the falls might have already been gone. I guess they changed them out since Ontario is phasing out those flashing green signals.

Are the incandescent peds with the round visors still up?
gailgrove   [Mar 13, 2012 at 03:07 AM]
To be honest I was a little distracted by the mercs, and the falls so I didn't notice. Laughing

A lot of post tops there were still MV too, I wonder how they all look at night. Cool
streetlight98   [Mar 13, 2012 at 03:09 AM]
i went there last August. Such a pretty sight to see the falls lit up at night. I can only imagine the wattage of these lamps. Shocked I ate dinner in the skylon tower. Probably the best meal I have ever eaten and the most expensive too. I remember that chicken parm and those mini potatoes... Very Happy
gailgrove   [Mar 13, 2012 at 03:14 AM]
4000 watts each! And there are 21 of them! Shocked Here is some history.
joe_347V   [Mar 13, 2012 at 03:18 AM]
I think these are the ballasts they use. Shocked
gailgrove   [Mar 13, 2012 at 03:27 AM]
Shocked I just posted a picture of the lights!
streetlight98   [Mar 13, 2012 at 03:28 AM]
Shocked That's a lot of juice! They're hyro-powered though right? So i guess it's not so bad in that perspective...
gailgrove   [Mar 13, 2012 at 03:32 AM]
As far as I know they are powered by the regular grid. Now that electricity could come from hydro judging by the location but that's not really a guarantee, they could be coal powered, or nuclear, or gas, or wind or any other source from anywhere in North America! Razz
streetlight98   [Mar 13, 2012 at 11:57 AM]
I thought in the excerpt you linked it metioned hyro-electricity... Neutral
gailgrove   [Mar 13, 2012 at 03:15 PM]
Well it is quite likely that at one time they were powered by only hydro electricity, however now I'm pretty sure they just run off the grid from a mixture of sources.
joe_347V   [Mar 13, 2012 at 08:50 PM]
Fun fact: The hydro plant there used to produce 25 Hz AC, which was used in Southern Ontario until the mid 40s or so. They even made 110V 25/60 Hz preheat ballasts at one point for use here.
gailgrove   [Mar 13, 2012 at 08:59 PM]
Cool! I don't think I knew that. Idea
streetlight98   [Mar 13, 2012 at 09:33 PM]
25 Hz? Sounds pretty cool. Wouldn't the appliances flicker a bit though becuase of the lower cycles/second?
TiCoune66   [Mar 13, 2012 at 10:03 PM]
Fluorescents would definitely flicker Shocked
gailgrove   [Mar 13, 2012 at 10:34 PM]
I would think so, early electric power wasn't very standardized, or reliable. Shocked
