Hmm. These do quite well for an IAW (illuminated aluminum waffle). Razz Smile

They also look brighter on the road than this. I have to agree these fixtures are not very attractive, but they are a lot better than some of those other fixtures out there.

Yeah, these do look great at night when they do their job. I wonder what these would look like if they actually painted them green LOL. They'd probably look better than white or gray.

do these actually look as good as they do in the pictures? how does the light compare to mercs?
Antstar85   [Jul 04, 2012 at 06:17 PM]
These lights really do a nice job lighting the streets. I have the 93 watt one in front of my house and looks great. These are brighter than mercs but it to me looks very close in color. The only thing I don't like about these is the glare, it's fine when your driving but the ones at intersections can be a bit harsh when your looking at the light, other than that, they are decient fixtures.

i can't figure out why they think bare LEDs are better than using a refractor. have you seen any of the induction lamps like in new jersey or california? which do you think looks closer to the mercury vapour luminaires?
Antstar85   [Jul 04, 2012 at 11:35 PM]
We had test inductions up. They were the US lighting techs Shoebox induction fixtures and to be honest, the LEDs were much brighter. The inductions seemed more blue in color compared to the LED fixtures.

I agree LEDs should have some sort of refractor, it would help with the excessive glare they cause.

Induction is technically a fluorescent lamp (usually 6500k), and the LED color temperature can vary, depending on the die construction and phosphor. THey do have more glare then (coated) mercs, as the MV coating can diffuse the light, but a clear MV is just as glary, as there is no diffuser. (unless a add-on )

All I can say is that I like the white light more!

do the lights have that 'blinking' problem like the LED christmas lights do, that when you drive by them they appear choppy? we have some really crappy ones down here on the beltline that do that, albeit not as bad as the christmas lights.
GullWhiz   [Jul 07, 2012 at 03:04 PM]
Actually Bryant, those should not have any blinking......

The reason the Christmas lights blink is because they are diodes which only flows electricity in ONE WAY. The AC electricity alternates 60 times per second (which is why you see the 60 hz) so the Christmas lights are directly connected to the mains, without any drivers. So this is why they flicker 60 times per second (60 times on 60 times off total of 120 alternative times).

Those more expensive screw in LEDs and the streetlights do not have that flickering because they have drivers inside (basically same concept as an electronic ballast) which controls the circuit which they either work as a DC output or a MUCH higher frequency that an human eye can not see the flicker (such as 10,000 hz or something, I am no expert in that area)

So I have never seen a flickering streetlight, but I have seen cheap LED screw in flicker and some earlier Exit signs....but the higher quality exit signs, traffic lights, and the screw in LEDs (the ones with heat sinks) should not flicker at all....the flickering may be just that the LED beams are so narrow so when you are moving, it seems like they are flickering, but they are not really flickering but you are passing each LED diodes as you pass by it each diodes reflects at your eyes.....

Although I have had some reports some Autistic people have more sensitive eyes and can sense flickers that most people can not see.
