Powdercoating
Powdercoating is the process of baking enamel onto aluminum parts. The parts are bathed in electrostatic chemicals which the powder adheres to. Then the housings are sent through a large oven to melt the powder into paint that cures. In this picture, Eagle Mark IV housings have just exited the painting oven

We have some of these, in green, 3,4,5 section heads, all LED.

Nice! Mine is 3 section, black, all LED. You probably saw it already in my collection album.

seems like a pretty durable way to apply the finnish to the signal heads, most of the ones in my city are yellow but the newly installed ones are dark brown.

Powdercoating is what most quality outdoor equipment is painted with, including cars. the paint is baked on

Nice. Does the paint still need to dry or can assembly start right after the metal cools?

once the paint is baked in all it needs to do is cool and its ready for assembly. Visors are treated twice for the black undercoating.

Ahh. Time is probably another reason most companies use this method then. I'm guessign black visors don't need the second coat though. i always like seeign how stuff is made. It's one of those things that has always fascinated my. Smile

black visors get two coats because the exterior is gloss the interior must be flat to avoid light reflection/glare. plastic visors are injection molded all one color and hand painted black after (can't bake plastic!) I like seeing how stuff is made too. McCain did a segment on the discovery channel once which showed their headquarters in Vista, CA and their casting foundry in Tijuana, Mexico. Their stuff looks nice until you hang it ...doh!

I've seen that segment too...pretty interesting stuff but I can't seem to find the link to the video anymore.
