This was the earliest traffic signal produced by Econolite after buying GE's traffic signal line in 1956. The Long groove had 3 grooves down the back of the head. It was replaced in 1959 with the Short Groove model that was better at keeping water out. This was restored and given an 8 inch green arrow lens to be displayed as the "side street" left turn.
Well you could put it that way, green and amber arrows are the only ones used here.
And some more interesting things about Ontario's traffic lights: 12-8-8s are as common as gulls, all pedestrian signals are 12" (single or dual section depending on age/features), flashing green ball protected lefts still exist along with green arrow only protected lefts, 8-8-8s are still approved for the left secondary head on smaller streets, permanent span wires are very rare.
I put the arrow in this one seperately. it came with 3 ball lenses. The green arrow was approved before the yellow and red were, thats why many only had green arrows. 8 inch arrows in red yellow green were made in glass, plastic, and LED. Nowadays 8 inch arrows are banned from new displays, and arrow indications must be 12 inch, where ball indications and still be 8 inch or 12 inch. Although many cities and states are doing away with 8 inch traffic signals, they are still on the books to be used
