Around here they do the same thing with HPS fixture, disable the ignitor. I believe AEL only ships certain wattages of MH fixtures with SCWA ballasts so that utilities can't do this...

I heard 175-400 watt metal halide fixtures have to use SCWA ballasts.

I think you could still order fixtures with the traditional CWA ballasts here in Canada.

What's an SCWA ballast?
joe_347V   [Nov 13, 2011 at 08:27 PM]
A Super Constant-Wattage Autotransformer ballast usually used to run PSMH lamps.

I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, an SCWA is essentially a CWA ballast with the ignitor built into the ballast circuit, as opposed to a separate ignition circuit (like HPS ballasts use).

The ingitor in PSMH ballasts is separete like HPS. i thought only AEL used the term SCWA.

seems rather silly to have an integrated ignior as the ballast is useless when the a bad lamp has been sitting in there and fries the ignitor!

Exactly.

I have a couple of HPS ballasts with a integrated ignitor, you have to bypass the ignitor if it blows.
