I found a picture of that parking lot on Armistice Blvd that my mom had from the early 80s and it looked like the lights were M-1000s at one point. There are still two M-1000s near the Dunkin' Donuts in that lot, though I've never seen them lit at night. I think these in the pic above are HPS though right?

OK, just so we're clear on this, those are CROUSE-HINDS OV50s. The clue is the position of the P-Cell receptacle.

yeah the westie ones had the PC in the front and Crouse-Hinds OV-50s had it like this then when Cooper renamed it the OVL and changed the paint to gray they put the PC back at the front. these lights must have been added shortly after the picture i found since the model 25s and the Crouse-Hinds OV-50s must have been from the 80s.

Actually, before Cooper relocated the P-Cell back to its original location, Crouse-Hinds repainted the OV50 and renamed it the OVL when the OVS and OVM first rolled out.

Ahh so the first OVLs looked like this too? I like Cooper's original three-letter model numbers OVC, OVS, OVM, and OVL since they actually stood for something. OVC was "compact", OVS was "small", OVM was "medium" and OVL was "large". The models they have now appear to just be random with the exeption of the OVF and OVD which could be "flat" and "drop". Since the OVS name was already used they couldn't use it for "sag" so I guess they chose OVY. But OVH, OVG, OVX, OVZ all seem to be random to me...

I heard that the Cooper OV-25s are now called the OVW (at least the full-cut-off ones are). They have the same reflector as the OVF/OVY/OVD though, not the westie style reflector. Sad A member here has a 400W HPS Cooper "OVW".

Was their a reason for Westinghouse chosing the numbers they did for their model numbers or was it done at random? GE went by the maximum wattage for their numbers in their model numbers but others seem to jsut have done it randomly.
