Philips EnergySaver 5W Soft White CFL: tiny!
This is definitely an oddball. It's the first time I've seen CFLs made for such low wattage incandescents. However I don't think they'll get extremely popular since their incandescent equivalent aren't going to be banned by 2012, nor 2020 (as of today).

I couldn't resist upon my visit at Trois-Rivière's Home Depot to take one of those LOL. The ballast casing looks huge compared to the tiny tube! There's not even one complete twist LOL.

Since GE calls these helical lamps, and it's not a complete twist...I shall call it a halficle! Laughing

We have in Israel many CFLs of 5W of Osram, usually with E14 base.

Wow. The wimpy thign doesn't even have a single full twist. Razz

I installed one of these in my dad's number sign light about a month ago, the sign is designed to use tubular 25 watt incandescents but this should last a lot longer since the sign is direct wired and runs 24/7.

24/7? Is it like an adress number light? If so, you should offer to wire a PC to it for him. Smile
gailgrove   [Dec 05, 2011 at 01:12 AM]
Yes it is, there is no way to wire a PC onto it, it is embedded into a plastered wall.

Hmm I guess the only way to automate it is to either use a remote PC or a timer.
gailgrove   [Dec 05, 2011 at 01:41 AM]
That would involve ripping apart the drywalled wall on the inside of the wall. Razz
streetlight98   [Dec 05, 2011 at 01:45 AM]
Just grab a glove and unscrew the lamp each morning. Razz Laughing
gailgrove   [Dec 05, 2011 at 01:48 AM]
Or just leave it running all the time since it only uses 5 watts!

Like those LPS crosswalk signs! Razz
streetlight98   [Dec 05, 2011 at 01:54 AM]
those wonderful CFLs can't take the heat of running 24/7, although maybe a little lamp like this won't have it as tuff.
gailgrove   [Dec 05, 2011 at 01:55 AM]
I'm just glad it works, out of the 200 or so units in his townhouse complex only around 10 of the number signs are kept in operation.
joe_347V   [Dec 05, 2011 at 01:55 AM]
Well he could always convert it to 5w PL. Razz

LED Idea
gailgrove   [Dec 05, 2011 at 02:04 AM]
I was thinking one of those LED exit sign retrofit lamps might work, as long as it is a white one. 5 watt PL could be nice but again it would require more wiring that would cause the wall to have to be torn apart.
