On the left is a 75w Philips lamp (one of those odd-shaped ones). It's date code is "5D". The right one is a 100w GE lamp, date code "S8". Can anyone ID the dates on these? Thanks!
Yep, 1998! As old as you! You should keep it even when you're 100
That is a Philips "square" bulb, with the Westinghouse "eye saving" design (remember, philips bought out the real Westinghouse around 1982). They were marketed as "longer life" bulbs under Philips. They are still around under the "halogena" name. I know the pac-man symbol means a certain factory, but I don't now which one!
My Mom had one of those (60w I think) in a light in her loft (rarely used so it lasted until 2010 or so. She's not a lighting nut but told me she laughed when she took it out when it burned out because it said "longer life" and lasted from the late 80s until 2010 or so! There are still Phlips "director" bulbs up there I think. Anybody remember those?
The 100w GEs from that era are great, I have 3 of them (etch in bad condition). All wattages from that era are good! Especially when 60w bulbs still had a vertical CC-8 filament instead of the CC-6 horizontal. I remember 25w bulbs with those! I want all wattages from that era soon! I am on the hunt!!!!
Mike, what is your birthday?
Yep. I plan on hanging on to this guy. i have connections to another, I'll keep you posted on that one. I believe it's a 100w version. And yeah, older incandescents lasted a lot longer than the made-in-china or made-in-mexico stuff we see today. My birthday will be coming up in a little over a month (May 6).
LOL. That means pre-1997 for the westies!
I have heard you are good at date codes, do you know how to date Westinghouse bulbs? I have a Bug-a-way that needs it. It has the same W etch as your T-19 ones in your gallery, only it is A-19. Has a BEAUTIFUL blue glass insulator and copper contact with plenty of solder. Should I get a CFL buglight and take it out of service?
I'm not familiar with GE incandescent date codes though...
