Jefferson 400 watt Mercury Vapor ballast can.
Here is an old 50's maybe Remote ballast can. This was found in the base of an abandoned light pole, the other two light poles already had everything missing but this one didn't, so I got it since the poles were abandoned and the parking lot had new lighting already.

Nice save! now you need a remote ballasted fixture! Wink Very Happy

Neat a can ballast!, what was it originally powering?
LilCinnamon   [Feb 23, 2012 at 05:35 AM]
It was originally powering an OV-20. I wonder if I can get the OV-20 that is still on the pole abandoned. There are some new Model 13's on newer poles but they left the old OV-20's up, There are three of them, one still has the refractor but it's a bit cracked, the other two are missing the refractors and lamps.

I wonder if I can save this one, The Arc Thrift store owns it and I have been working at one of those thrift stores for a while now... Maybe I can ask the store I got this from if I can have on of the OV-20's. The one this is from isn't the arc I have been working at, but it's the same thing and I have some connections with the store, maybe I can get lucky and get this OV-20 taken down for me. xD

Cool ballast! Good luck with the OV-20.

i sure hope there's a wiring chart for this thing. Shocked
Silverliner14B   [Feb 23, 2012 at 09:29 AM]
I helped Ian with the wiring, it has 4 primary wires (H1 to H4) and two secondary wires (X1 and X2). Typical transformer set up. To operate on 120v you need to set the primary side in parallel by hooking H1 and H3 to hot and H2 and H4 to neutral. 240v operation is done by connecting lines H2 and H3 together and connecting H1 and H4 to the mains. Important, don't connect H1 and H2 together and same for H3 and H4 together, it will short out! Shocked

I've worked with 3kVA power transformers using the same exact configuration. I connected 3 of them on 3-phase power in different ways to get different voltages!

A 110x220 CWI. Those seemed to be common for mercury lamps back than.
joe_347V   [Feb 23, 2012 at 02:56 PM]
Hmm the 120/240V ballasts seem to be commonly used back before multi-tap ballasts became popular.
streetlight98   [Feb 23, 2012 at 04:20 PM]
Yeah i see 120X240V ballasts most often. Which works for me since those are the only two voltages I would ever use...
LilCinnamon   [Feb 23, 2012 at 04:23 PM]
I hope my M-1000 is a 120 x 240, but unlikely since the other two M-1000's had 480 volt single tap ballasts. So it's likely my M-1000 with the original ballast is 480 volt single tap or 240 x 480.

I am glad this ballast can is 120 x 240 though, I will be able to light it! I still gotta test it first...
joe_347V   [Feb 23, 2012 at 04:25 PM]
It seems tri-tap ballasts are pretty common in Canada though since CSA regulations require ballasts with a phase to phase input (like on 208, 240, 480, and 600v) to have a isolated secondary so only CWI ballasts can use those voltages here. Instead the 120/277/347V tri-tap ballast seems to be fairly common here.
streetlight98   [Feb 23, 2012 at 04:38 PM]
@ Ian, try running the M-1000 off a dryer outlet to see if it has a 240V tap. Smile

I already tried and it tripped the circuit breaker. I am not sure why it tripped the circuit breaker but I am pretty sure that it was not wired for 240 volts.
