Traffic signal with new lenses lit! Here is the traffic signal lit, how does it look? I think it looks nice and bright. What are those little circles you see in the middle of the lens when lit? Is that the filament? Or is it a shadow of something? If they want to make LED modules look the most incandescent, they would want to have a little circle in the middle like what you see on this picture. I think I need some 12 inch glass lenses for my McCain Polycarbonate signal. I am not sure what I am going to do with my Indicator Controls Corp signal, it has three Dialight LEDs in them and I want to keep that signal so I can have an LED signal as well. Traffic signal with new lenses lit!

Here is the traffic signal lit, how does it look? I think it looks nice and bright.

What are those little circles you see in the middle of the lens when lit? Is that the filament? Or is it a shadow of something?

If they want to make LED modules look the most incandescent, they would want to have a little circle in the middle like what you see on this picture.

Hmm. IIRC, my traffic signal's lenses don't have that shadow. I wonder if only glass ones do? I guess my lenses aren't that drab them becuase my signal's lenses light up these colors too. Except my red is more pinkish. Buy my green is dull and blueish too. How come the green lens isn't GREEN? I like the LED greens here becuase they're a nice true green, not blueish like incandescent greens.

I think it's the shadow formed by the base of the lamp since there is no reflector behind that part. The lamps with the heat shield seem to have less of this problem.

Oh and the Swarco LED modules seem to somewhat emulate the halo in the middle.

@Mike, well they are bluish for a couple reasons, one is to help people with red/green colourblindness see the difference easier, another is because the signal incandescent lamps are more yellow than regular bulbs. The really old signal lenses (like on the Darley's) were actually green in colour.

That explains it since my bulbs all have heat shields.

Hmm you're using signal lamps Mike? since I thought you were only using the regular kind Razz . Anyways I've noticed that 12" signals have less of the halo in the centre too.

I know I have red-green colorblindness, but even so I can tell the difference between all three of them very easily.

Red-Green colorblindness isn't that bad at all, I can tell the difference between all colors. The colors I have difficulty with though is the light green and it looks yellow. I mean I can tell a DIFFERENCE but I have to look very close. But I can tell the difference between all colors.

@ Joe; no, Sylvania fan lamps. They're just smaller incandescent lamps.
@ Ian; ah I see. I never thought about colorblindness. I guess that could cause serious problems if a driver can't distinguish the colors. Isn't that why they have the specific order of the colors though? (Red on top, yellow in the middle, green on the bottom.)

Ahh, the old clear fan bulb trick Laughing I used to use them too, their filament seems to match the real signal lamps the best.

Indeed. Smile Those were the lamps that came with the traffic light. I got it from a auto-repair shop in Foster, RI that got them from somewhere. It was origionally wired to a lamp cord (in reverse polarity may I add Shocked ) I fixed that right away. Now it has a grounded cord and a sequencer. Cool I'll have to get some more fan lamps, as they're starting to die on me lol.

Heh, I used them in my Econolite 12-8-8 when I added the sequencer in but I recently switched back to the original 60w Sylvania signal lamps that came with it. I plan to order some 69w signal bulbs in the future though.

@Ian, here's a shot I took of a Swarco LED module lit up, you can see it sorta has that circle in middle like on the incandescent signals.
