Reminds me of those gas discharge tubes in chemistry class
The teacher gave us all spectroscopes and asked us to describe the spectrum of each tube.

In the National Science Museum in Haifa - The Madatec, they have also a similar display, with 4 hollow cathode sign tubes (Neon signs) with helium, neon, krypton and argon+mercury.
