Huh? A Fuse box on the Ceiling?

Found this in the basement of a old antique store. O_o Note the ceramic knobs supporting some of the cloth wires too. I guess they might be original to the house (late 1890s- early 1900s).
The original panel had been replaced sometime over the years though, pics below.

But actually if the whole thing is dead, it's no longer an issue.
A lot of breaker panels are installed in odd directions here in Canada. Mine is upside down, probably so that the unfused wires are as short as possible in the panel. American code dosen't allow this though, since the main breaker must flip down for off.
OT but do I see part of an 8' slimline in the first pic?
I have a breaker panel code violation going in my house too...it's IN THE BATHROOM!
