New Find! A Powerlite Gumball!
Here's a shot of my Powerlite gumball I found in a corner of a antique mall. This is after I cleaned it up a bit but as you can see the gumball still needs a fair amount of work. I still don't know how old it is or the model number (or the fact that Powerlite even made a gumball O_o).

It does look pretty nice lit up with a 300w Sylvania clear mogul I had lying around though. I'm not sure what wattage was the original bulb since the etch was a bit faded, it's blackened but it looks like it might still work since the filament is still intact.

Oh and [url=http://i560.photobucket.com/albums/ss50/joseph_125ON/Gallery%20of%20Lights/290faaaa.jpg]here's[/url] how it though looked when I got it at the store and [url=http://www.galleryoflights.org/mb/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-10872]here's[/url] a closeup of the head.

Pics of the gumball disassembled:

Here's a couple of shots of my Powerlite gumball, the one on the left shows it after disassembly showing the interesting reflector which has a outer metal housing and a inner reflector unlike most gumballs I've seen, also you can see the house side shield and the Holophane glass refractor before it got washed.

The other shot is of the Powerlite logo on the slipfitter and the slipfitter nuts (it uses a U-bolt fitter).

Thanks, I've also never seen this style in use before too.

it was on a s braced arm and also on yonge and eglinton and if you go to duplex south of eglinton at eglinton station there is a powerlite gb on a s braced arm

I'm sure you mean this design was used there, no one could really tell where this exact one came from. Confused

Oh and you still haven't responded to my reply(to your PM). Confused
toronto6940   [Feb 24, 2012 at 05:59 AM]
they were powerlite gumballs, joslyn gumballs, westinghouse gumballs on a s braced arm from 1945 until 1994 and were incandescent and i saw some of them painted light blue and were replaced by metal halide urbs

I think you already said that a few times already. Confused I really don't want to argue on my pic about this (or have long comment threads unrelated to the pic). Rolling Eyes

if you go to bathurst and ellerslie on streetview you see ov-12 and also powerlite was never used in the states and was used mostly in ontario
joe_347V   [Feb 24, 2012 at 06:08 AM]
Thanks for the location but next time you should reply back in a PM, that way it keeps the comments on topic and easier to follow. Wink
toronto6940   [Feb 24, 2012 at 06:20 AM]
this date is 1945 i think
joe_347V   [Feb 24, 2012 at 06:37 AM]
I'll see if I can find a date code.....

This is one cool gumball! Cool Now that you have the light and the old yellow stop sign, all you need is an old pole and arm and a backlit street sign and you have a street corner in your backyard. Razz Very Happy
joe_347V   [Feb 24, 2012 at 09:48 PM]
Thanks, Mike! and yeah this would be a great match for that yellow stop sign I have lying around, as for a lightup street sign i saw one on Craigslist a few years ago. But I've always thought they were newer than the gumballs.

Anyone else have anything to say about this?
gailgrove   [Feb 25, 2012 at 12:10 AM]
I do! (I missed it) Nice! This is a cool light!
joe_347V   [Feb 25, 2012 at 12:22 AM]
Thanks Niall!
gailgrove   [Feb 25, 2012 at 12:25 AM]
Where did you get it?
joe_347V   [Feb 25, 2012 at 12:29 AM]
From this place, here's how it looked when I found it.
Silverliner14B   [Feb 25, 2012 at 12:59 AM]
You need a 295w or 327w mogul base incandescent bulb to match in with the Powerlite Wink

BTW, toronto6940, Powerlites/Sylvanias did find their way in the states, just not common. Here's one on a public street in San Mateo, CA.
joe_347V   [Feb 25, 2012 at 01:47 AM]
Hmm I wonder if the original bulb was a 295 or a 327w, I'll have to test it since the etch is a bit faded.

And nice find there is that R37 HPS or mercury?
Silverliner14B   [Feb 25, 2012 at 02:46 AM]
Yeah let us know what wattage the bulb might be. And that R37 is a 250W HPS.
joe_347V   [Feb 26, 2012 at 12:09 AM]
Ah, thanks I just tested it and I found it drew around 411 to 416 watts, you can see a pic and some more details here.

I was looking at vintage lighting and came across this picture of a fully cast variant. Reminds me of the Westinghouse AK-10 cuplights that New York used to use.

Like the cuplight, the fully cast variant is dosen't have NEMA latch on optics, instead the refractor is hinged.
