A beautiful classic from north of the border. Powerlite B2214M5
eBay find. My first 125w mercury fixture! It is NOS in its original box. The ballast, capacitor and socket are all on a metal plate that is easily detachable from the fixture chassis. I bought two new EYE 125w mercury lamps to go with it, but I need a USA or Canadian made 125w merc lamp. If you have a spare, let me know.
Nice fixture! Interesting look too. Looks like a bullet or a torpedo. Also interesting how it opens up backwards like the Holophane "high wattage yardblaster" as I call it lol (dunno the real name). I think the Form 109 opened backwards too? I suppose that was more convenient for servicemen who were servicing the light from the pole via a harness before bucket trucks became the norm.
Hey Canadians, have you ever seen this particular model in use up there? I looked through the pics here on GoL, saw a few Powerlite mini gumballs plus some made by McGraw Edison/Line Materials and EPAC. But nothing exactly like this. There were similar ones though, the tall heads apparently are indicative of integral ballasts while the short heads are either incandescent or remote ballasted.
Thanks Mike and Andy! I really like this light! The 125w merc by the way is comparable to a 70w HPS in initial lumens. It seems weird to me now that we got 70w HPS while 50w HPS is equivalent to 100w MV, 100w HPS is equivalent to 175w MV, and we never had 125w MV in widespread use here in the USA. Even in Canada they are less common than in Europe and abroad.
I actually think that 70W HPS is a better suited replacement for 100W MV. We have lots of 50W HPS and 100W MV here and there are 70W HPS lights in BVE territory and the 100W mercs are definitely brighter than the 50W HPS when the lamps are within a few years old. 50W HPS is too dim for street lighting IMO, I'd much rather see 70W or even 100W HPS.
