By Request: Preheat Aquarium Light From Dump
Hey Xmaslightguy, here's a photo of that fixture I was talking about. I've since cleaned it up a bit and put in different lamps (I wanted daylight and wanted to preserve the Sylvania/GTE F40/Design 50 it came with, and didn't like the F15T12 Kitchen & Bath's color). At least one starter is a really old Sylvania with the lightning-bolt-S logo.

I have a pair of '93 Design 50s back home, though I think one may be getting closer to EOL, and a 2013 one as well. I also have a pair of the old GENERAL (GE) ELECTRIC Chroma 50s back home that are Very well used. I had a couple Ecolux ones and a meatball one for a short while but gave them to Icefoglights. This lamp may go to him too, I've got a case of F40s for him started already.

I have a case of Sylvania D-50's that I got fairly chap at a garage-sale back in the summer.
Pre-Eco ones too Smile

I like the old General (GE) Electric etch Smile
Something like those Ecolux ones you gave Icefoglights are just the type of common/boring lamps you don't feel anything bad about just using til they go EOL, where kinda hate to do that with a nice vintage lamp..
Even something common & boring, its a shame to see it dumped in the trash with lots of life left. Always worth saving if you can use it Smile

That was my thought, good tester lamps if nothing else, but an excellent color. I'm glad I live next to a transfer station, I intend to keep saving tubes and ballasts long-term.

@Andy, ahh that's a fairly wide range of majors lol. Engineering does have quite a bit of math in the first two years but if you feel like you can handle it then I would go for it.

Yeah the C50 or D50s are quite dim but they're kinds useful where you don't need the full output of a regular fluorescent lamp.
streetlight98   [Oct 31, 2016 at 09:37 PM]
Yeah I don't have the "math head" necessary for engineering. I get troubled with rational expressions and radicals and stuff so I'd never get some of the stuff I'd have to know being an engineer lol.

On a side note, today is October 31st, meaning it's the Gallery of Lights' BIRTHDAY today!!! HAPPY 7TH BIRTHDAY GOL!!!! Cool
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Nov 01, 2016 at 02:05 AM]
Wow, I didn't know its B-day was Halloween!
xmaslightguy   [Nov 01, 2016 at 02:24 AM]
@GEsoftwhite100watts:
Yep, you might as well take advantage of having access to that place while you do Cool

@joe_347V:
I agree, I've used C50/D50 in certain places for just that reason..

@Mike:
Had no idea GOL's 'birthday' was on Halloween .lol.

Yep Ian created this site on October 31, 2009. Cool You can see here that Ian was the first member of the site (which comes at no surprise, lol). It didn't take long for lots of people to register for the sight but a lot of people who registered have never even been active on the website!

Basically GoL was formed as a protest against LG because of the way they handled some situations. I was new to LG at the time so I don't remember a whole lot of the crap that went down, but Jace and Brian were head-to-head (both admins at the time) and eventually it lead to Jace and Ian creating the GoL. Later, LG's administration team was reorganized and they went from like a dozen admins to only two or three. At the time there were just too many chefs in the kitchen. Poor Aaron (alights) was banned at least once as part of the drama and Jace was banned too but both rejoined. All because of a disagreement in opinion (leading to abuse of powers).

so GoL was set up as a sort of "safe haven" away from the drama. But now that LG has sorta settled down, it seems the GoL has died down. This site used to be quite active between 2010 and 2013! Then our founding members just got caught up in other more pressing matters and haven't had time to be on here I guess. Joe and Darren are the only admins on the site pretty frequently, though there's really not a whole lot to administer these days lol.

I think part of the reason GoL might have died down is the number of glitches that have occured over the years. For awhile uploading was turned off because the site had maxed out. Lots of people had to delete their photos, which left a lot of members pretty pissed off. IMO we should do a "sweep" and delete members who have never posted and pictures and haven't been active in more than a year. Anyone who's posted any pictures or has made more than 25 posts would be exempt from the "sweep". It would keep the site's size down a little (though not much, since the pictures take up the most space) and would cut back on the "clutter" of inactive users on the site.

Another "glitch" is that there's a lower file size limit, in order to keep the site from maxing out as fast. There's X amount of space the site can take up, and the more pictures and the bigger those pictures are, the faster the site fills up. It's not really a glitch, as it's intentional, but I know Alex has made a number of complaints in the forum about it, which are never addressed by the admins. I've tried to tell him to shrink his pics down but he didn't listen... Oh well...

And another "glitch" happened when something went wrong on Ian's end and the domain for the site wasn't renewed annually. An honest mistake, but again, more members were upset by it and the rest of us who are religious toward GoL were concerned that this was the end, as there was no communication from Jace or Ian as to what was going on.

I'm sure you guys might remember a few of those incidents. I know a number of us were staying in touch via email while the GoL was down (and through LG).

For me, LG is too busy. I can't keep up with the site lol. I do stay on top of picture uploads but I generally don't bother with the forum since there's just too much going on lol. And a lot of it I have no interest in. And a lot of it is stupid stuff too lol.
joe_347V   [Nov 01, 2016 at 10:39 AM]
@Mike, yeah all disciplines of engineering has a bunch of math courses in your 1st through 3rd year and each engineering course itself is fairly math heavy.

Yeah Mike pretty much summed up the history of GoL in his post. Can't believe it's been 7 years since the site started. Shocked Yeah the picture size limit I believe was set when GoL started which was ironically better than L-G's limit at the time (I believe L-G back then limited you to 1024x768 pictures) it's just L-G has gotten more space over the years while GoL has around the same space as when it first started.

LG has been way more active for sure. I don't remember the drama since I joined LG first, in 2011. I found GOL later. With LG being busier I've been able to get questions answered more quickly there (a lamp dated, will this ballast/lamp combination be OK long term, etc). I remember at least one of the space crises a few years ago though on GOL.

My main posting on GOL has been the 'Off-topic" thread, I'm sure. I don't even want to know what my post count is there by now. Something ridiculous. One other thing I do miss actually is the other forum 'games'. Remember trying to guess that song, etc?

My thing with LG though is that yeah, some of the administrators can be a little picky sometimes, and frankly there's a lot of stupid stuff that gets posted there. LOL. That said, I know there's still a lot of stupid posts/rookie questions on there from me when I first joined as like a 13-14 year old.

Oh, and I just met another LG member in person not long ago.
streetlight98   [Nov 01, 2016 at 06:22 PM]
Yeah I miss the street light activity. Before, GoL was mostly all street lights and LG had more of a street light enthusiast population but now it's mostly all fluorescent. I like fluorescents too, but there's not a ton of people into street lights. Most of the active members here and on LG aren't nearly as passionate about street lights as they are about fluorescent lights. Nothing wrong with that, I just miss all the talk about street lights. Neutral
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Nov 01, 2016 at 10:38 PM]
Yeah, I've always thought of GOL as more of an American-oriented group...American streetlights and HID lamps in particular, with some other stuff. LG is very much a fluorescent database in my experience too. Being mostly a fluorescent enthusiast myself, I post most of my pictures there since that's where they get seen and I can get lamps dated quickly. Same with HIDs. But for example I posted the clear 175w Lifeguard fellow LG member Icefoglights gave me on here too since I knew it'd get noticed, being related to North American street lighting.
xmaslightguy   [Nov 02, 2016 at 02:22 AM]
I wasn't around for the drama on LG that started GOL (I think I joined back in 2010, and it was 2009 or something that I discovered through YouTube that there were other people into fluorescent lights. (Christmas lights I knew long before that...think it was around '98 or '99 when I first joined a forum for that...))
I can remember GOL being down at some point, and also remember when uploads didn't work, I think those both hurt the site. (also remember downtime with LG, but it wasn't as long)

I mostly post Streetlight & HID related stuff here, then Fluorescents & everything else on LG, plus a limited amount of both types on a UK site.

Have never met anyone from any of the lighting forums, but have met multiple from the Christmas-light forums I'm on (infact there was a meetup just a couple weekends ago that I went to Smile ) Also met someone off a non-light-related forum back a few years ago.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Nov 02, 2016 at 05:00 AM]
As for meeting people on non-light forums, my current roommate and I met through one, by accident. No joke. We also have family in the same places, grew up similarly, have the same personality, AND we share the same birthday. What are the chances of THAT?!
streetlight98   [Nov 02, 2016 at 06:00 PM]
Yeah sounds like you met your doppelganger lol (well, not counting looks, unless you guys also look similar!)

I'm not a member of any non-lighting forums. I've met up with a few different enthusiasts though (some LG members, some GoL members, and some neither).
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Nov 02, 2016 at 07:22 PM]
We don't look QUITE the same, but actually kinda close!
streetlight98   [Nov 02, 2016 at 09:24 PM]
That's just too funny! It's like you guys were meant to cross paths! Sounds like you'll have a friend for life! Does he share any other interests with you besides military vehicles? (like any remote interest in stereos, old flip clocks or lighting?) That would be even cooler!
joe_347V   [Nov 03, 2016 at 04:14 AM]
Yeah, it's kinda funny you managed to meet your almost exact doppelganger. Out of all the enthusiasts, I've only met Mike in person.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Nov 03, 2016 at 04:57 AM]
Yeah, it was a bizarre coincidence to say the least.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Jan 23, 2017 at 01:57 AM]
Actually, he got a kick out of a vintage Mitchell 2X40 preheat shop light I picked up. Even though he's kind of misLED.
