No they're still up and probably will be for a while. The owner wants to replace but is waiting for a "good deal" on new lights.
joe_347V   [Nov 11, 2012 at 09:42 PM]
I wonder if they are opting for new cobraheads or are going to remove the arms and put floodlights up.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Nov 11, 2012 at 11:07 PM]
I think probably cobraheads judging by the fact the owner likes the diffused glow...
joe_347V   [Nov 11, 2012 at 11:30 PM]
I think flood lights with coated lamps and diffused glass would work pretty well too. And plus floodlights have more light throw to light the faraway areas of the track.

Well, He won't be replacing the "rack" for the lights, as it was confirmed that they're stuck in place from rusting. He (the owner) actually found a lot of 130 hubbell sports lights for a "great price" and they'd be "perfect for the track" but he realized they were single tap 347V, so I blew a sigh of relief lol. He's looking for the cheapest replacement. He will also be using clear lamps since he doesn't like the pink glow of the coated lamps (he originally used coated lamps in the MH sports lights that're already up but relamped them with clear ones). Apparently the soft even glow doesn't matter to him anymore lol. If i was him I'd just cough up 25,000 and light the estate with 6X 1000W PSMH highmasts on 150ft poles Laughing
traffic light1   [Nov 15, 2012 at 11:50 PM]
Why not just keep what he has????? Question I hope he knows the poles do not have alot of life left I would say 10 years max Exclamation All this time I was thinking he needs highmast lights. I think 12 or 10 1000w PSMH widelite light flood lights would be the best I think 70 or 80ft would be good. (...) on one pole in the center.
streetlight98   [Nov 16, 2012 at 02:55 AM]
well, the existing lighting isn't really bright enough. not to mention you can get much more light from 128 320W PSMH lamps than 128 400W MV lamps AND save 10,240 watts total! the color and quality of the light is much higher too. A pole renewal would never hurt, but these look like they can last a good 20-30 years. I mean these look good for being about fifty years old. I've seen poles in much worse condition. I doubt he's planning a pole renewal for all 16 poles. I was joking about the highmasts though. Laughing highmasts would be a pretty good idea, but i know him and the price would scare him away like a cat chasing a mouse. Laughing

These are currently being replaced with LEDs. Looking into where the old fixtures are being dumped...
lite_lover   [Aug 05, 2018 at 02:02 AM]
Oh no, hopefully you can find out where they are being dumped. It would be nice to be able to rescue some and or at least save some lenses and nice old PC's.
joe_347V   [Aug 05, 2018 at 05:07 AM]
Yeah it would be nice to be able to save something.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Aug 05, 2018 at 06:56 AM]
Try and rescue some of these! If you'd store a couple I'd be interested once I could get to them.
streetlight98   [Aug 06, 2018 at 01:20 AM]
I found out a friend of mine is saving each and every light removed. I do not know if that includes PCs and lamps but he said I have first dibs at whatever he saves so I will keep you posted. I will grab all of the undamaged PCs (since they're all vintage) and distribute them. I will keep whatever lamps he doesn't want and will be picking out a couple of the lights for myself. He is putting these into long-term storage so if anyone wants one locally I can grab one for you when you're in the area. Not looking to ship these big 400W lights. A royal pain to pack these big boys up. Darren is the only one lucky enough for me to ship a big 400W size light to. Laughing

I found out the new lights are AEL ATBL Autobahans, 5000K. Dunno the wattage, but being a ATBL, they're 170-280 a pop. Four LEDs replace 8 MVs. Four of the mounting pipes are left naked, which looks stupid to me... Confused

I legit thought this was a modern art piece when I saw the picture. Shocked In all seriousness, it seems like something you would see in an 80's lighting catalog. Sad to hear these are coming down but it's great that they are being saved. Where are you going to store all of them though? Shocked
lite_lover   [Aug 06, 2018 at 10:07 AM]
That's great news to hear each and every light is being saved! Very Happy
streetlight98   [Aug 07, 2018 at 02:19 AM]
LOL yeah this is a pretty crazy installation. 16 of these poles around the track. The poles are from the 1960s. The bracketing almost looks home-made. There's some sort of chain-type material holding the bracketing to the pole. The poles sway in the wind too. Not sure how healthy the poles are but they don't look great. Laughing

As for storage, I'm not storing them. My friend is arranging long-term storage (he's keeping the lights; giving me access to whatever I want from the lot).

Yeah I'm glad they're being saved. Unsure if it includes the flood lights in the parking lot (some MV, some MH) and lights in the "pit" area or not though. the lights in the pit area are the same mix of 400W cobraheads, but I think they're mostly M-400s with some 25s. There's also MH floods in the pit area. The cobras over there are not well maintained. Pretty dim compared to the track cobraheads.

Here's a streetview showing some of the "pit" lights (the cobrahead quads) and pan right to see the track lights in the distance. Here are some more pics:

My uncle actually appears on the far right in the last pic! He's the announcer there.
xmaslightguy   [Aug 09, 2018 at 03:35 AM]
That's a crazy looking setup Laughing

Glad to hear that they will be saved!
streetlight98   [Aug 09, 2018 at 11:24 PM]
Yeah one heck of a set-up for sure. Laughing Definitely not the most efficient way to light the track but the lighting was very even and almost no glare from the cobraheads. There were a few MH stadium style spot lights on some of the poles (either 1000W or 1500W) and those improved the brightness of the turns quite a bit but at the same time creates a lot of nuisance glare at the stands. The flood lights are aimed parallel to the track so the drivers don't see any glare at all from them but the people in the stands would get blinded by them. Haven't seen the new LEDs at night in person but from the pics my brother and dad took, the glare is quite high from them.
xmaslightguy   [Aug 10, 2018 at 10:18 PM]
Blinding glare-bombs deff would not be something you'd want for drivers on a track like this Shocked
I wonder how brightness will compare with the new LEDs?
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Aug 11, 2018 at 06:48 AM]
Mike, are some of these going to be available to the lighting enthusiast community>
streetlight98   [Aug 11, 2018 at 10:54 PM]
Possibly, but for local pick-up if they are.
