I love Boston's hack wiring for their lights. It's unbelievable!
joe_347V   [Dec 29, 2011 at 08:32 PM]
We have some pretty bad wiring jobs too.
Antstar85   [Dec 29, 2011 at 08:34 PM]
Yep, there are some great hacks out there! Rolling Eyes
streetlight98   [Dec 29, 2011 at 08:48 PM]
Did they use a green wire for hot?! Shocked
gailgrove   [Dec 29, 2011 at 09:14 PM]
What I find alarming is it seems all of Boston's lights are hacks like this. Shocked
streetlight98   [Dec 29, 2011 at 09:18 PM]
Nah, I've been to boston and most still have the underground cable, but there are soem strings that have overhead wiring like this one.
joe_347V   [Dec 29, 2011 at 09:27 PM]
My area actually has traffic signals with failed underground cables and now has overhead feed wires to the poles instead. Confused
gailgrove   [Dec 29, 2011 at 09:29 PM]
Thankfully that isn't done anywhere here, of course we seem to replace traffic signals as soon as they turn 20 years old, if not sooner. Some intersections have been replaced after less than 6 years. Rolling Eyes

That's a weird wiring job i hope who did that did not get paid for that ( what i call no work at all) that would be very......... Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Rolling Eyes

There is no wiring like that here. Xcel energy is good about messy wiring. So you don't see poles wired like up there. Sometimes you see light poles connected to the ground with overhead wiring, but those feed in at the arm's end so it still looks neat.
gailgrove   [Dec 29, 2011 at 10:38 PM]
Here sometimes temporary overhead feeds are neat looking and tend to get fixed quite quickly, by the looks of this the underground feed failed and they had no plans to replace it, the same thing happens in Toronto. Toronto is just as big a mess as this. Rolling Eyes
joe_347V   [Dec 29, 2011 at 11:16 PM]
I don't think they even replace those overhead feeds, this has a overhead feed since 2007. Rolling Eyes
LilCinnamon   [Dec 30, 2011 at 02:00 PM]
Overhead feeds are more common in Xcel energy if they use utility poles. And utility poles with fixtures on them is pretty common in Denver anyway.

Overhead feeds aren't that common on metal poles anyway, you see them from time to time but not often.
streetlight98   [Dec 30, 2011 at 02:43 PM]
Any overhead feeds here are done by National Grid so they're done with the utility cables and done right. RIDOT seems very closely tied with the electric company. I think NGrid may own, service, and maybe even install some if not all RIDOT lights. I'm not sure though; just a guess.

It looks like they took a small chunk off the OVH! Like instead of drilling a hole they just broke a pice of the metal to let the wires run in.

WHY do that?!
gailgrove   [Dec 31, 2011 at 04:20 PM]
Laziness, why else? They could of just run the wires in around the slipfitter but they took the quick way out. Rolling Eyes
LilCinnamon   [Dec 31, 2011 at 05:13 PM]
Somehow I don't think breaking the fixture is that easy. It would be MUCH easier to run it through the slipfitter.
streetlight98   [Dec 31, 2011 at 07:13 PM]
Nah. Just need to hammer a flat head screwdriver into the housing and you have a nice hole. Surprised
joe_347V   [Dec 31, 2011 at 07:32 PM]
That or tin snips. Razz
gailgrove   [Dec 31, 2011 at 08:02 PM]
My guess is they took some linemens grabbed the housing and broke it out that way, I don't think tin snips would quite cut it (no pun intended) My wouldn't anyways. Laughing
