The Silverliner himself and a very cool experiment!
That's yours truly holding a T12 fluorescent being energized by the Tesla coil in the electrical class! You can feel the juice sizzing through the glass in the tube! BTW the tube is an '88 vintage red etch GE F40/CW/WM/RS.

I bet you were having loads of fun Laughing

Did you already touch to a live insulated 15kV wire from a NST? You can feel the magnetic field around it!
Silverliner14B   [Mar 02, 2011 at 10:43 PM]
This was run on 12kv! Yes high voltages can induce in air. There was one guy walking on top of a train at a station in India, his hand got too close to the 25kv lines and he was zapped to death! However Tesla coils aren't too dangerous because the juice flows on your skin rather than inside the body. Still gotta be careful tho.

Is that motor that huge or is it just close to the camera?
Silverliner14B   [Mar 03, 2011 at 01:51 AM]
Yes it is pretty big, its actually a motor driven generator.
Form109   [Mar 03, 2011 at 01:57 AM]
induce?....more like the voltage exceeding the dielectric strength of the air...i don't think that's a magnetic field your feeling,it's a small electric field around the tube.
TiCoune66   [Mar 03, 2011 at 02:08 AM]
Really? Then how could air-core inductors work? Razz
Form109   [Mar 03, 2011 at 03:17 AM]
the coils do generate a magnetic field but i doubt you'd feel a magnetic field unless your made of metal. Smile
TiCoune66   [Mar 03, 2011 at 03:24 AM]
Alright then, let's state it otherwise: What ELSE it could be? XD
GullWhiz   [Mar 03, 2011 at 04:11 AM]
I have touched two leads of bare wire that had 17KV coming out!!!! I was wearing high voltage lineman gloves to get to know the feel...

This telsa coil, looks different than the common style of telsa coils.
The power to this lamp, come directly from the very high voltage/current arc of the coil and not from static electricity, so the lamp should be glows very brightly.

Is it true that electromagnetic fields can cause cancer with prolonged exposer to them? I doubt it but that's what my mom keeps telling me. Neutral Confused
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Nov 16, 2012 at 03:52 PM]
Pardon my ignorance but the lamp still works normally after this right? Or was this a spent lamp?
A_lights   [Nov 16, 2012 at 05:21 PM]
im sure it works normally, basically the same thing as when i run a fluorescent lamp on my NST

very cool experiment Idea
Silverliner14B   [Nov 16, 2012 at 05:21 PM]
Yep the lamp's fine.
Antstar85   [Nov 16, 2012 at 08:14 PM]
working near live 345kv, you can feel the induced voltage on just about everything. I have thrown 12'' arcs grounding out de-energized bus in the substations and even from my own tools. most of the time we bond our lift to the bus to prevent this while working on substaion bus.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Nov 17, 2012 at 12:58 AM]
Was this one of your florescent tubes?
I think you look like a mad scientist...were you taking a college electrical class at the time?
chrislights71   [Nov 17, 2012 at 01:37 AM]
Very cool experiments! Very Happy
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Nov 17, 2012 at 01:41 AM]
Was it really dimly lit in there or is it just the camera?
Silverliner14B   [Nov 17, 2012 at 02:16 AM]
Yep it was one of the electrical classes I took. It was not my lamp and yep it was about that dim.
