What was there before?
traffic light1   [Dec 03, 2012 at 12:26 AM]
Older halg. lights that were 100w and was alot of them. Shocked [this is a emergency lighting system]

Emergency lighting for what?
traffic light1   [Dec 03, 2012 at 12:34 AM]
My dads home lot is 13 ac. and next to a trail and people get lost. Shocked this trail is bad I hate it but the state likes it this trail goes around the back of the 13 ac. lot.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Dec 03, 2012 at 12:35 AM]
I see...are these lights in nightly use?
traffic light1   [Dec 03, 2012 at 12:38 AM]
Not in the summer. I will see as I get the lights in but yes some of the drop offs are 50 to 75ft. but the halog. are
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Dec 03, 2012 at 12:42 AM]
I see...still a cool flood you got there though!
traffic light1   [Dec 03, 2012 at 12:44 AM]
Thank you! I hope to get more.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Dec 03, 2012 at 12:45 AM]
Good luck Very Happy

Cool flood! To avoid the voltage drop, you should either run this at 240v (higher voltages have less drop) or get a #10 extension cord for it.
traffic light1   [Dec 04, 2012 at 09:46 PM]
The light is 700ft from the home I had to lay out the extension cords
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Dec 05, 2012 at 01:10 AM]
LOL imagine all 16 gauge extension cords...
streetlight98   [Dec 05, 2012 at 02:26 AM]
Most are 18 guage IIRC... certainly there'll be some voltage drop there! Hopefully not enough to affect the light, though it wouldn't surprise me if as the lamp ages and in cold weather, the lamp has a but of trouble starting. a MV lamp needs less OCV, so this would be eliminated but they don't make cram 1000W MV lamps as far as i'm aware...
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Dec 05, 2012 at 02:33 AM]
Or as the lamp ages and gets harder to start it might start to cycle just like an HPS! I saw a vintage ad somewhere for some Westy cobrahead (I think it was either a silverliner or an OV-25) that said it's ballast could withstand up to a 45% voltage brownout :shock:before the lamp would go out. I'm guessing it was a CWA ballast?
Mike, #18 wire would maybe be those household 2-prong ones...I think most are #16, or #12 but I'm not sure (this being the common orange outdoor extension cord)
streetlight98   [Dec 05, 2012 at 02:37 AM]
Probably a CWI ballast. Those are the best at regulating voltage to the lamp and can withstand momentary voltage drops like if you plugged in your vacuum or something... Remember, larger number means thinner wire. I've stripped lots of outdoor extension cords. The ones i have are 18 AWG. They do make "Super duty" ones with thicker wires though.
joe_347V   [Dec 05, 2012 at 02:40 AM]
Hmm the thinnest extension cords sold here in Canada are 16 AWG, 18 AWG cords are only used here for power cords and low voltage wiring. If the light was 700 ft and I used it often I probably would have something permanently installed or even a second service.
streetlight98   [Dec 05, 2012 at 02:47 AM]
Hmm. Perhaps they are 16AWG... I'll have to check. I'm so tired i'm probably going to start misreading comments. Laughing It seems whenever we get a warm weather interval after really cold weather i end up sick with a cold. Neutral I have one now and I'm just exhausted!

BTW, i gave my "commercial wallpack" light back to it's previous owner. I removed the 250W MH/MV ballast and installed the 175W MH/MV ballast i had used in my OV-25's ballast box so it'd be better suited for their backyard. I gave them the light with the Plusrite 175W MH lamp too since the only ballast i had for that lamp is now in the light. Besides, now that i have a genuine 175W MV OEM ballast i don't need the Advance one. BTW, does anyone know if the higher OCV in MH circuts can shorten the life of a MV lamp?
traffic light1   [Dec 05, 2012 at 11:35 AM]
The cords are 2 16g put in one. so it is like a 8g. or 30amps Shocked The ballast say +/_ 15%. the volts to my dads home is higher as well it is 125/124 Shocked when it should be 110v or 115.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Dec 05, 2012 at 03:47 PM]
Me too actually...
traffic light1   [Dec 05, 2012 at 08:16 PM]
ok well my moms home is 112v/114v.
