CGE 17A297E1 ballast from 03/90.
This week's harvest has been pretty good. Among all the incandescents I got, I also found a pair of fluorescent ballasts, including this one.

When I got it there was that large stain of tar covering the left part of the label. Today while packing some of my stuff I decided to try cleaning the label with Windex and an old toothbrush. To be honest I didn't expect it to work, but it did! I could remove 95% of the tar covering the label. A particular thing to note with late 80s CGE ballasts is the glossy paper they use for labels. The sort of gloss on the label makes it easy to clean!

The ballast is dated 03/90 and appears to work. I didn't test it but the primary reads 4.5 ohms, which sounds OK. I would have to test the secondary though.

"Not for resale" - interesting. Looks like the wires were cut short.

Do all fluorescent ballasts have the letter-number-number date code (B73; A03; C79) or just Universal branded ballasts? I've only ever seen a universal RS magnetic ballast so i'm not sure...

I think only some Advance ballasts and Universal ballasts used that format. The CGE ballasts used a all number format (8603 = March 1968) with the year digits reversed and GE used the two letter format.
