Sweet! Hopefully it's M59 400W MH and not M155, which is 400W pulse start MH.

Smile I am putting my own ballast in it Cool. it is 400 MV/ MH

As far as i know you can't. I think the case is filled with tar (to help cool the ballast) and if that's the case, the ballast can't be replaced.
traffic light1   [Nov 12, 2012 at 07:25 PM]
well that is ok. Very Happy looks like i will have to get the hammer out.
streetlight98   [Nov 12, 2012 at 07:41 PM]
I wouldn't do that if i were you... what's wrong with the ballast that's already in the case? BTW, you'll need to melt the tar after.I honestly wouldn't mess with the ballast can unless you're sure you know what you're doing and your sure you can do it. You don't want to slice the thing in half and realize you can't finish it. Sad

ok like I was saying when I get it I will need to look at it. And I am going to not use the older ballast I am going to drill into the tar and that will brake it up. That is what I think will work the best. The old ballast is 1,000w hps 480v I will put in a 400w MV/MH 120v ballast.

I see...now you need a nice 400w Westy LifeGuard for it!
traffic light1   [Nov 13, 2012 at 11:02 AM]
Yes.
GullWhiz   [Nov 13, 2012 at 03:03 PM]
trust me...if it's tar filled...it's gonna be a LOT of work! I haven't had very good luck with those...and they are MESSY!

But if they aren't tar filled, like one of my remote ballast I had which was not tar filled....great! ....some remote ballasts are just weather proof which are just tightly sealed with a bunch of screws and gasket....and when opening it, it's EXTREMELY clean with a FRESH smell inside it!

Thank you!

Interesting, I thought all of the ballast cans were tar or epoxy filled.
streetlight98   [Nov 13, 2012 at 08:52 PM]
Me too! I thought they had to be or otherwise the cap and/or ballast would overheat. Neutral I like the idea of being able to replace the ballast though!
traffic light1   [Nov 23, 2012 at 02:37 PM]
YES! I got the ballast and the seller sent me a 120v 1000 mv! Surprised
streetlight98   [Nov 23, 2012 at 03:05 PM]
cool! i guess that means your ballast can won't need surgery? Razz Laughing

Wink
streetlight98   [Nov 23, 2012 at 06:43 PM]
i bet that 1000W ballast is HEAVY though!
joe_347V   [Nov 24, 2012 at 01:34 AM]
The coil itself weighs around 25 lbs. I wonder how much will the can weigh. Razz
streetlight98   [Nov 24, 2012 at 02:02 AM]
probably close to double that. i know 400W MV ballast cans are 40 pounds alone give or take a few pounds according to Joe M. Shocked then again those are 1940s ballast cans and i'm assuming the 1000W ballast is within the last 15 years but still. Shocked
joe_347V   [Nov 24, 2012 at 02:33 AM]
Ahh, thanks, I've never seen a ballast up close so it's hard to judge their weight. Shocked
streetlight98   [Nov 24, 2012 at 03:15 AM]
they're only about the size of a 2 liter bottle of soda too. Shocked talk about some extreme density!
