Universal LPF40-1 preheat ballast
This ballast lives in my latest find. It's NPF, so no PCBs to worry about! The two larger wires were connected to it and used to supply 120V. I removed them but I saved them for later use inside another vintage fixture!

I can't precisely date this ballast because of the lack of date code... or it's underneath LOL.

it's underneath if there is one. It'll have the letter of the month (A-M like the standard codes) and the last two digits of the year.

Nice find! I've never seen a Universal Ballast under the Universal Wire and Cable Co of Quebec before, mine all say Paterson, NJ on them. And yeah Universal ballasts should have a code underneath.

My 1960s fixtures came with some 60s cloth wiring used to feed the ballast, I removed those and set them aside for later use.

The spare two-lamp F40 RS industrial type fixture with the plunger sockets in the basement at my grandpa's has a black and white cloth wire coming out of it. I guess that's how they were wired too. I have yet to peek inside the fixture to see what type of ballast is in there. My grandpa doesn't like people in his basement without him lol. He doesn't want me rummaging though stuff down there... i guess when i get my own place I can get the lights and look at them then... They must have full-power ballasts since the lamps warm right up in the dead of winter.

Looks like a 34 watt lamp was involved at some point?
