"General" brand FS4 Starters
Anybody got any info on these? These came to me in a fixture so I have no idea where they may have come from or how old they are besides that they came in an Arrow 2x40 preheat shoplight that was shipped from Rhode Island to Alaska...and made it intact, no less...

The only General I know is General Electric, or AM General...(The manufacturer of postal vans and military vehicles and buses).

I bought a box of 25 starters on eBay. These are two of them. I have no idea on the brand background. As far as I'm concerned they're just generic starters but I bought them because of the metal case and since it was like $5 with shipping for all 25! Shocked There should have also been two more starters in the fixture taped together. I think I included two used starters plus these. The used ones would have been the ones in the fixture when I got it.

The used ones must still be in the box...At least I'll have spares... Laughing

I think they were in the light channel. Maybe I didn't end up including them. Some of the starters were junk in the six fixtures so I might have used the good ones in my other lights. If one of these General starters bites the dust I'll send you out a replacement if you need one. Wink

They may be buried in the newspaper...I still need to read the grocery ads just for the heck of it...

I definitely didn't toss them loosely in the newspaper. They would have been inside the fixture channel or secured to something so they wouldn't get lost. I must've only sent these two. Were these installed in the fixture or were these inside? If these were inside they're the only ones. Sorry I don't remember. I'm usually good at these things but it's been awhile since it was boxed up and a lot's going on. Laughing

They were taped to a piece of replaced THHN wiring in the fixture with Scotch tape...

Interestingly, one of these was definitely a bit slow (granted, I had heavily used lamps in this). Bought two brand new GE starters (metal-can) and threw a pair of new-out-of-the-case Philips Alto F40T12/DX lamps in, and now it starts up in the opposite fashion. It also exhibits the behavior I'm told is typical of specifically AdLites- the non-compensated lead?? side starts much more slowly (the opposite side than before) and especially when the lamps are cold there is a very noticeable "shimmering" effect, which was absent with halophosphate or triphosphor lamps. I'd read about these ballasts and their startup behavior and running behavior, especially with deluxe halophosphate lamps, now I'm seeing it...

There's a definite stroboscopic effect (despite being stroboscopic-corrected). I may have to find triphosphor lamps of some sort as this is a desk light. Laughing
