The GFCI protected outlet that the M-250 R2 is plugged in to.
There used to be as normal outlet here. When the GFCI circuit breaker went out I thought.. The light is probably overloading the circuit with the bathroom outlets being used for heaters and blow dryers, so I decided to plug it in the garage.

I will continue in comment since there is a stupid character limit. I might need to fix that. xD

"Advantages and disadvantages" meaning what? I prefer ground down. It isn't nessecerily "upside down", the oulets in my house actually have the engraving facing so that it can be read when the ground is pointed down. My school has the ground up and it alway bugs me. Every other place I go to has the grounds down, I believe that is the correct way, but it could be installed either way. I find ground down to be more common and I prefer it anyway.

Well I know if you put the ground up there's less of a risk of shorting the outlet out if something metal falls down on the prongs.

I personally put mine ground down though since most right angle plugs here are designed so that the cord points down if the ground is down.

I know NEC allows both but I'm not sure about CEC or Ontario code.

As an electrical graduate, the ground up is actually safer if you have a metal frame plate. Because if somehow a metal plate gets loose and falls down while a plug is plugged in, you'll have serious sparks flying around!

I have even heard of stories when someone drops a metallic shiny gumwrapper on a loose plug and grounding was down and SPARKS WENT FLYING!

Ground up would be better for areas or use when you do heavy work like using a lot of machines, use grounding prong often, always plugging and unplugging. I mean have you guys seen the cracking and chipping around the grounding area...that is caused from frequent plugging in and out....and it breaks the plastic....so grounding up is a safer way to go. For home living areas....either is fine......

Commercials should do grounding up though....and as for if the outlet was mounted sideways...its suggested to have the neutral up and the hot down.

Meaning the ground is pointing left, right?
GullWhiz   [Apr 06, 2011 at 01:14 AM]
that's right...It seems in Illinois/Chicago area had more of the sideway outlets when I lived there...
gramirez2012   [Apr 06, 2011 at 03:11 AM]
I'm in the Chicago area, and the outlets are sideways. Drives me nuts! Especially with wall warts and things that are meant to hang down from the outlet. It seems that the rest of the country has them oriented vertically, ground down.
GullWhiz   [Apr 06, 2011 at 03:31 AM]
Yeah I remember those issues....heavy transformers could be a problem.....or some of those types of air fresheners that couldn't rotate LOL.....

The outlets at my school are sideways. The electric box is sideways and the outlet is sideways. Most of them are that way. I forget which way the ground is too.. Left I think.
joe_347V   [Apr 06, 2011 at 07:38 AM]
@Jace I wonder if they mount outlets sideways in Chicago because they use EMT pipe for a lot of their wiring, even residential?

Most outlets that I see here even in commercial, have the ground down.
gramirez2012   [Apr 06, 2011 at 03:39 PM]
They use EMT for ALL electrical wiring in Chicago. The unions don't allow Romex!
GullWhiz   [Apr 06, 2011 at 04:38 PM]
Yeah, I know that Chicago has extremely strict fire codes too!
LilCinnamon   [Apr 06, 2011 at 09:23 PM]
What is EMT?
GullWhiz   [Apr 06, 2011 at 09:26 PM]
Electrical Metallic Tubing! You can find them from 1/2 inch to 2 inches in the electrical aisle, they are found as 10 footers usually...
gramirez2012   [Apr 06, 2011 at 09:26 PM]
In layman's terms, EMT is conduit.
GullWhiz   [Apr 06, 2011 at 09:34 PM]
Yes sir! A type of conduit, like the grey electrical PVC, there's Ridged Conduct, there's also FMC, LFMC, RNC, MC, AC, FC......Look them up see what each means in Conductor terms!
NiMo   [May 01, 2011 at 07:53 PM]
Actually, we carry EMT thinwall all the way up to 4".
GullWhiz   [May 01, 2011 at 10:41 PM]
I never said 4 inch didn't exist....I only said the sizes that's avialable in electrical asiels. Razz Razz Bigger sizes are available in electrical stores or contractor warehouse....you can't find anything bigger than 2 inch in a puny electrical aisel in a puny cheapskate hardware store LOL....

Personally, It drives me nuts when people put outlets with the ground prong on top or install the box sideways! A friend once shared a story with me about a necklace falling from the shelf above onto the plug of a stereo that was half in/half out of the outlet... but still making contact. Boy it was a fireworks show!
streetlight98   [Feb 14, 2012 at 09:12 PM]
I don't like the ground up either. It makes pluging in the charger for my laptop look awkward since it has one of those PITA plugs that have the cord come out the bottom like a dryer cord.
gailgrove   [Feb 14, 2012 at 09:29 PM]
It is the better way to do it in my opinion, things are being changed now to fit ground up configurations better.
