My house all nice and bright Yep, I did all this the day after Thanksgiving. I like the colored lights so much more than the clear ones. To many people around here use clear ones and it looks rather drab IMO. The icicle lights are supposed to flash, but only the far right set does. The middle one has all of them one with no flashing/twinkling and the left set has only 2/3 of the set lit. I can probably fix the out set, but I don't have the time. Tell me what you think! Thanks. about 90 minutes of work. Add an extra hour if you include me testing the sets and replacing bad lamps.

There was one year I started putting up lights in September...did a bit each weekend til Thanksgiving (lights on night)
Sometime in October was a common start time too Surprised

Wow. I usually put up the christmas lights the weekend of Thanksgiving and they're on from 4PM to 11:30PM every night starting the first Sunday in December until around New Year's. I take them down around New Year's as long as there's no snow. If there's snow i wait until it melts, though the lights are shut off.

Yep LOL I used to really do allot Smile

I run 'em from 4pm - 9pm for the first couple weeks then go to 4pm - 10pm
Like you I also go through new-years, then they stay off & I start taking down (sometimes a few things end up staying in the backyard til spring since they get frozen in place...)

BTW, the Santa Claus on the front steps has a 40W incandescent lamp in it. We've never had to change the lamp since we bought it. If my memory serves me right it has a 40W Philips lamp with the shield logo...

I have a similar size plastic santa...like yours it originally had a 40W incandescent. I changed that for a 3-foot cool-white fluorescent - to me it looks much better being evenly lit, and the colors look better too Smile

A two-foot fluorescent lamp would probably better fit my santa, though there is only an opening large enough for the incandescent lamp to fit. To change the lamp, you remove three screws holding a round plate to the back and pull that plate out of the santa. That plate has the socket mounted on it and from there you simply change the lamp and assemble the unit again. We have to tie the santa to the railing with string since it'll blow away otherwise. Shocked Laughing

Sounds very similar to the incandescent setup mine originally had.

I fed the fluorescent up through the opening it had at the bottom/feet (wasn't a real fixture, but a board with lampholders & ballast)

I tied mine to the house with wire to keep it from falling off the roof/blowing away LOL really have to tie stuff down good here with the winds we get...

Hmm, if I stick a fluorescent in one of those plastic Santas and use it here. I think I'll need a HO lamp. Laughing

I had no problems with a 'normal' tube ... but electronic ballast is requirement LOL magnetic won't even try to start on those cold nights (especially once its below 0F)

why are magentic fluorescent ballasts so dependant on the temperature? HID ballasts work fine in the cold (as long as you're not in the tundra or soemthing)...

I think its more that the tubes become harder to start as they get colder...rather than the ballast itself being cold.

How come electronic ballasts don't have that problem? Do they have a higher operating voltage?

yep higher Open circuit voltage (OCV) typically 600V and up to 1000V for T8 slimline lamps
the typical OCV of a magnetic RS ballast For 2 F40s is something like 300V range, and when lamps are cold the mercury is more solid and dosent vaporize or something like that

ahh i see... (That's also another reason why my grandpa wants to upgrade his shop lights. They don't always work good in the winter.

yeah that's pretty typical of slimline lamps in winter to flicker, the 75W ones work without plastic sleeves down to about 40F without any flickering problems after warm up but with tube guards ive had luck down to about 10F they usually have around 725 OCV for the 2 lamp units and 600v for the 1 lamp units which supposedly work fine with 59W T8 lamps without flickering or ballast overheating

Interesting that one lamp ballasts work fine with T8s... I (or NGrid) will be changing all the ballasts though just to give his shop the facelift it needs. I also offered him to repaint the walls too but he could care less about the way the shop looks since he's really the only one there and doesn't feel the need to "make it his home". My brother's birthday party is the 13th of this month so I'll hopfully get to talk to him about it then...

As for me, I usually put up Christmas decoration day after Thanksgiving Smile

For me it's usually the day before my christmas break ends (which is usually the day after new year's). If there is too much snow though, they'll stay up, unplugged, until the snow melts enough for me to work.
