Merc in a Can
|
When the Ryerson Library/Podium/Jorgenson Hall complex opened in the early 1970s, hundreds of these 100w recessed mercury vapour cans were used as exterior lighting and indoor accent lighting. The majority of these fixtures was disconnected during a lighting upgrade in 1994 but I know some that are still powered. The ones that are still powered probably haven't been relamped since 1994 as half of them are burnt out or very dim.
This one has long since been disconnected and replaced with a F17T8 wraparound but it still sports a GE 100w /DX A23 lamp.

They seemed to have left most of the old recessed cans in place except for a few where they installed a fluorescent wraparound or a MH canopy light over the old can opening. There are some recessed incandescent recessed squares that got covered up with sheet metal though.
During the winter break, I might go around school and grab pics of the older lighting that they left behind during the retrofits.
Once thing I did notice was that they used so many of these fixtures that the original 100w mercs at full brightness must have overlit everything (Fixture spacing was like 3' ) . Maybe that's they replaced them all with fluorescent wraparounds.
I would've loved to have seen this in it's day though. I would think /DX would be a little strange indoors though (well MV in general) so maybe that's why they were replaced too.
I always wanted some nice recessed merc fixtures in a living room, etc. Preferably with the classic round fresnel lens, know the ones I'm describing?
Yeah, I guess by 1994 the original mercs would have been really dim (maybe like the level of a 40w incandescent ) so they probably though this old mercury vapour tech was dim and power hungry so they disconnected them and put in wraparounds. Personally I would have converted the recessed cans to 50w CMH or 2x PL-13 instead of installing wraps to keep the original look intact.
