WOW! Shocked Very Happy I want! I also want a couple of those Westies in the background. Very Happy But why take all of the fixture out of the boxes in the yard? Wouldn't they want the fixtures in the boxes so they can stack them on the truck and keep them safe from being damaged.

I think it's for convenience for the lineman, who wants to deal with a bunch of cardboard/trash on they'r trucks. Just grab some and go.... Razz I would really like to have some of those Westi's too. They look like OV-25's.

true... Ah i thought they were OV-15s but you're right, they look like OV-25s. Interesting how utilities would buy from multiple companies at the same time back then. Now utilities seem to "specialize" in one brand. NGrid flip-flops between GE and Cooper every few years but they lean more to the GE side.

Same here, back when it was Conowingo Power a Philadelphia Electric subsidiary they used GE exclusively now Delmarva Power went from Cooper to AEL. Now I think they'r stuck with AEL fever at least until they find a cheaper brand as the markets fluctuate.

Hold on a minute here come the heavy lift helicopter....... And the transport plane. I think we'll be good. Laughing I remember many years ago they rebuilt the I-95 on ramps near me and they had taken down 100's of 1965 flat bottom OV-25's and the yard they put them in looked just like this, Unfortunately I was too young to persuade any one to get me some and they were hauled off.....Heartache. Crying or Very sad

I can only imagine what NGrid's yard looked like after RIDOT installed all new freeway lights for I-295 at Exits 1&2, 4, and 7 and had NGrid remove the utility-owned lights. And when they replaced all the lights on the US 6 freeway. Hundreds and hundreds of 250W HPS M-250R2s on 25ft tall HAPCO aluminum poles with either 6ft tapered elliptical, 8ft tapered elliptical, or 10ft truss arms. Sad

You know I'm starting to get a bad feeling about street lighting these days. It seems to be going down hill. If they had just left mercury vapor alone I can assure you there would still be many classics lighting up the nights. Not to mention but around here when they did the change over there were a good number of incandescent lights they took down too. And it's getting harder and harder to come across vintage lights on the after market.

Now we're talkin'...The helicopter and cargo plane will transport those babies in style. Laughing I came across some archive photos from my local area with streetlights in them, it appears Westy OV-25 flat bottoms were quite popular for new installs after the OV-20.

Merc, you forget that newer technology means that mercury and incandescent, the two most inefficient light sources for streetlighting, have to be replaced. Also, what of new road construction? do we work around poles that are in desperate need of replacement as well as the underground infrastructure?
streetlight98   [Dec 08, 2014 at 12:24 AM]
Here they use all aluminum poles, so they aren't in any need of replacement. Poles from the 40s and 50s are still standing tall. HPS is more efficient in raw lumens, but if you light a 50W HPS and a 100W /DX merc next to each other, the 100W merc appears much brighter even though both are rated for 4000 lumens. Even 70W HPS appears dimmer than a new 100W MV lamp on a street. The street parallel to my grandparents' street had 70W HPS and 100W MV mixed and matched along the road and the newly-relamped 100W MVs looked a little brighter than a 70W HPS but it was so much easier to see under them. Funny how a 100W merc is way dimmer than, say a 250W HPS, but yet it's easier to see under the 100W merc since the quality of light is better. HPS and LPS get way too much credit with being so efficient when in reality, a lot of the light is useless to the human eye because it's so difficult to see on HPS-lit roadways. Although I dislike LEDs, they're a step in the right direction in terms of light quality.

@ NiMo, I'm thinking he means that newer fixtures are utilitarian and don't have the slightest bit of charater to them (namely the new LED fixtures). Even newer cobraheads have at least a little bit of character but these LED waffle irons are hideous lol.
