Norelco Duo
Date? If it helps I have an individual pic of each tube pictured. Top tube has modern Philips/Sylvania endcaps and the bottom one has early-80s Norelco endcaps. The bottom Norelco seems more italicized as well. I always thought the Norelco etches looked goofy LOL...

Sorry to hear that...seems Norelcos are still sorta common along with Westy blackenders, Sylvania LifeLines, GE MainLighters, etc.

Norelco is N American Philips they could not use the Philips name because it clashed with a petroleum (gas) company, as you know Philips is the largest lamp maker after taking over Westinghouse, anyway nice tubes.

Really? The way I've always heard it, the Philips name could not be used in the USA because it sounded too similar to Philco, which was an electronics company (radios, etc.; I believe Philco is now defunct, can anyone confirm that?). Anyway, they came up with the Norelco name instead (NORth american lighting and ELectrical COrp).
Yep, these are probably the two best 4' lamps in my collection besides that cool white GE Mainlighter.

Philco was bought out by Philips in 1981 or 1982...

I mentioned this before to you but you never read my comments properly. Confused Rolling Eyes Mad

If that was the case, why couldn't they use the Philips name on lighting products? Was there a copyright, patent, etc. that had to expire or did the name take awhile to change during the transition, like how we saw Westinghouse brand bulbs made by Philips and "Philips-Westinghouse" bulbs?
streetlight98   [Jun 24, 2013 at 12:04 AM]
they switched to Philips after they bought out Philco. They probably had to wait x amount of years before they could buy out Philco.

It seems GE street ligths are the only ones to remain under the same company the whole time. AE went to ITT, which went to Thomas & Betts which went to Acuity brands. Westinghouse went to cooper crouse hinds. Line Material went to McGraw Edison which went to Cooper industries as well. oh yeah and Hubbell stayed the same too...

1. Philco had a injunction on Philips not to use their name until the buyout nullified it in the early 80s.
2. Consumers will tend to buy a familiar brand name and at that time Philips was unknown in the US.
3. Because of 2, companies will choose to keep their old and familiar brand names even years after a buyout or slowly transition over to a new name.

Case in point the Philips shaver page still has the Norelco name on it.
