A failure of the electrodes in HPS lamps, are very rare. This is more common on high output HPS lamps or mercury free HPS lamps, but not with regular HPS lamps.
Update: It seems that the actual problem wasn't the lamp itself, but the ignitor, since yesterday there was a strong power outage that extinguished this lantern with its current HPS lamp, and it still took lot of time to restrike.
