here in el cerrito at potero and I-80, caltrans is putting up new signals. i thought they are supposed to be going to led but they are still installing HPS in new construction.
They're doing that here too but they're also rehabbing the overpass at the same time and they're replacing the thin Toronto octagon poles with the nice and sturdy looking MTO round poles.
Ahh here they tend to leave the signals alone unless they need to be replaced (intersection upgrade, road widening, electrical issues, etc). I don't think i've ever seen an intersection upgraded out of the blue before though. I don't like the super wide poles RIDOT is using on their new signal installations though. The things are wide enough to be a cell tower mast!
I think it's by province with only NS or NB requiring all new streetlights to be LED . Over here in Ontario some cities have began changing out their lights to LED but I still see HPS and MH being installed here.
they were going to test some LEDs in Cranston and Providence in 2011 but that never fell through, likely the price. The acorn posts are induction now though for the most part. all cobraheads are still HID and i'm pretty confident they'll stay that way for a few more years at least until the price came down. RI was late in the incandescent to MV changeout and late in the MV to HPS changeout so they'll be late in the HPS to LED changeout if the pattern continues.
they don't look exactly the same, the newer ones has more curve in it less sharp angles and the older ones has more sharper angles and the newer ones has shorter arms, they look similar to some newer arms for MD state highway lighting on I-95
Well yeah I wasn't being totally literal so yeah they're not 100% identical but they loom pretty similar. Just reuse the old poles! Nothing's wrong with them!
sometimes I think upgrades are made just for the sake of upgrades....and at times they seem to pick the most random intersections to upgrade. then I start thinking along the lines of "there's plenty more intersections that need that update ALOT more!"
There's still some older intersections in my area. The signals have all been replaced during the LED refit but some old double guy poles still remain. (sometimes with plumbizer Fortrans fitted which looks weird on a double guy mast)
It bugs me seeing plumbizer fortran signals on double guy arms. Atleast use a hanger on it, its probably the same price as the plumbizer
We have some of our original Eagle and CGE intersections but those intersections over the last 5-10 years replaced the signals with fortran for an exception of 1-3 Eagle Mark IV's or CGE's at a few intersection i.e this eagle intersection and this CGE intersection
Ah here they don't use the plumbizer mount for new installations. they install the signal to a pipe and secure the pipe to the mast arm like this. I prefer older installations with the signals on hangers like this.
Notice how even at very urban intersections that we don't have street lights on signal poles. We have lights on standalone NGrid-owned poles or standalone RIDOT lights (metered lights hooked up to a relay) instead.
Recent intallations in downtown areas are more fancy looking and some have acorn post tops on them but no overhead lights. The acorns were PSMH but are all induction now.
Our fancy lights look a like this The post top coach lights at most of these intersections downtown were added on in 2004.
Our signal setups havent changed too much over the years. Only the Cobra's keep changing up. Some new intersections got eagle durasigs nearly all are fortran and a couple econolites. I remember we had 1 LFE intersection in 2002 but it got reupgraded with Fortrans in 2006
Ahh just the pole is black? Interesting that they still use the bare arm and yellow signals. Probably better for visibility. Our older decorative signals were green but we don't have any recent green signals. Most are yellow and have the tunnel visors. I prefer cutaway visors but they're only on the really old lights here. I see it's the opposite up in the GTA. Almost all cut-aways?
